Town Exercise One-Year Option On Donacien
Tuesday, 4th Apr 2023 11:10

Town have exercised a one-year option in defender Janoi Donacien’s contract, tying the 29-year-old to the club until the summer of 2024.

Donacien joined the Blues from Accrington for £750,000 in the summer of 2018 during Paul Hurst’s short-lived spell in charge.

“I’m delighted to have it confirmed that I will extend my stay at the club for another year,” Donacien told the official website.

“This is a great group to be a part of, so I’m excited to continue that next season.

“For now, though, my full focus is on helping the team achieve what we want to achieve in the coming weeks.”

St Lucia-born Donacien has made 104 starts and 14 sub appearances for the Blues without scoring.

This season, Luton-raised Donacien has made 31 starts and six games from the bench.

With two very young talents on the books, it's great to retain his experience whatever division we're in. He also comes across as having his head screwed on and being a decent guy, so not a bad mentor for that young talent. Also if we get promoted and sell Davis or Clarke for £20m in January 2024, we'll need to ensure we're not caught short!

Odd that they have decided only to take up a one year option, rather than to give him a new longer term deal.

Ipswichbusiness, I wouldn't say odd, I'd say smart. We don't know which league we will be in next season, so we shouldn't be negotiating any new terms. The problem with success is that a lot of the players who built that success will be replaced. Donacien has to decide whether he is happy being a squad/backup player. It will be very difficult to find a better player than him who would be comfortable with that arrangement.

Highgate, I don't think we will be a selling club, I think this is a longterm project, if we sell it will be to upgrade.

Excellent. Great player, great character, easily Championship quality. Having JD and Clarke competing for that right back spot is a fantastic situation. Plus I think he could cover all across the back line. Really pleased.

Ipswichbusiness - only need a year to be back in the prem and he probably won't make the cut then 😬

Like all clubs of course we will sell if a top Premier club offered ridiculous money that's how it works unless your Real Madrid then you reinvest. Remember when we sold Dyer got 3/4 in bang we got promoted.

ITFC forethought and planning into classic action again ! How great it is to have JD on the books and able to deputise with skill across a variety of roles !

Ipswich old boy. Hasn't it been said by the club, that players such as Davis, Clark and Broadhead are investments and assets with the intention of improving and selling on for large fees?
That makes us a selling club if the price is right.

A superb season from JD, but would imagine there will be a few short terms on the cards as with promotion would come big investment in the squad.

Depends upon definition of investment and asset.
If the plan is Premiership then any player we invest time in to develop to that standard has repaid the investment by playing.
Getting us there and continuing to be part of a successful team, they become an asset to the Club.
Why sell?
Perhaps if they thought they would get an upgrade or someone they could bring up to a similar standard, or so much money it made a significant benefit to the Club in the long term they might sell.
However I think the ambition is to be a successful Premiership side, not just holding our own but qualifying for Europe, with our own resources.

Very well deserved. He was treated pretty poorly by Lambert and Cook but never seemed to complain. Shame he has lost his place to Harry Clarke but will still have an important to play in the months ahead

Mickmillstash While yes it's a good decision fo keep him on, he certainly wasn't in line for player of the year before Clarkes arrival. In fact, compared to last season his form was nowhere near as good. Defensively was fine but his passing was a bit off and wasnt getting forward like he did last season. And actually since Clarkes arrival, when he has played, that part of his game seems to have improved again. So maybe Clarke signing has actually given him the spur he needed to get back to his best. So yes, good decision to take up this option.

Apart from a handful of clubs in the Prem every club is a selling club.

Didn't really see the best of him until he played in his favoured position of right back. When he came on for the injured Davis Clarke had to move to left back to accommodate him. Clarke is the better player because of his all round versatility especially at defending high balls into the penalty box where Donacian is vulnerable. Clarke is also proven at championship level playing regularly with Stoke city and it's no coincidence we've hardly conceded a goal since Clarke's arrival. The last two seasons Janoi has been outstanding for Ipswich but there must be doubts in the powers that be at the club he might not be able to do it at championship level hence the one year deal.

People who will look back at Town history will see Donacien as just a Town player, his stats are not that good.

But what a player he has been for Town, he had a rough start and I wondered why he was brought, but he has proved what a great player he has become.

Fully deserved the extra year and must be in for player of the year and can see him getting a new and improved contract in the next year or so.

Well Done to the lad full respect

Really pleased for him he has been a great club man while performing and giving his utmost when called upon he's been in the shadows recently but has taken it on the chin and kept himself fit and ready this is what we need in our squad.

I think that sees the end for KVY which is a shame because there is an amazing talent in there. He's not been the same since that injury. Shoot me but I also think Harness is looking unhappy since broadhead arrived.
