Blues Renew Philogene Interest
Thursday, 2nd Jan 2025 13:06

Town are again eyeing summer target Jaden Philogene as they look to strengthen during the January transfer window.

In July, the Blues had agreed a joint-deal with Hull City for forward Philogene and teammate Jacob Greaves with the Philogene side of the proposed move understood to be worth £18 million with the player understood to have agreed personal terms at Portman Road.

However, his former club Aston Villa had 72 hours within which to exercise matching rights as part of the deal they had agreed with the Tigers the previous summer, which they did and Philogene returned to Villa Park for £13 million - the Midlanders also taking advantage of their 30 per cent sell-on - with the forward signing a five-year contract.

But since then the England U21 international has made only three starts - two in the Premier League - and 11 sub appearances and Villa look set to allow him to move out during January, on loan rather than on a permanent basis with a number of clubs believed to be interested.

Sky Sports is reporting that the Blues remain keen on Philogene and are monitoring the situation and we understand that this is the case.

Another forward is an obvious Town target during January along with a central striker and probably a right-back.

Londoner Philogene initially joined Villa’s youth set-up from the Pro:Direct Academy and spent spells on loan with Stoke and Cardiff City prior to making his £5 million switch to Hull in the summer of 2023 when he was also interesting Town.

Meanwhile, reports of a move for Middlesbrough striker Emmanuel Latte Lath are understood to be speculation based on the Blues’ summer interest in the Ivorian.

I have a mildly uncomfortable feeling about him (Who can forget his dodgy agent? He's not exactly been brilliant for Villa plus my memory is the mess around he gave us. Perhaps that's not the case?)

Seems the consensus amongst comments here - and the apparent continued interest KmK, means I'll ignore my gut feel and hope it comes off.

More important however, is the hope no one comes with an offer we can't refuse for Delap!

gkroon89 - We can only have 2 domestic loans (from UK) but I think it's 4 from overseas. Cajuste is from overseas and only domestic loan we have at the minute is Kalvin Philips, so we have space for another loan from UK divisions.

The wordings a bit strange depending where you read it.

The Premier League handbook mentions 1 at any one time (doesn’t mention if within Premiership or outside). Other outlets suggest the 2 rule is within Premiership only - bit strange.

Considering we have Clarke, Broadhead, Chaplin, Hutchinson, Burns and Szmodics who can play behind the striker i don’t see why we need him. Just my opinion. If we were to get another wide player or midfielder I’d like to think we’d go for someone with more a physical presence.

Oh no. We're about to move to stage three of what could become a very silly saga.
Stage1.....Terrific player. This would be a signing of real intent.
Stage2.....Didn't want him anyway. Lazy player who's just after the money. We don't need him, we can do better.
Stage3.....Terrific player. This would be a signing of real intent !!

Why are we seeing the same childish comments we saw this summer? He agreed to sign for us… and his former club where he’d come through the youth system offered him a return probably on higher wages, with champions league football. If he were to come here on loan I would be excited. Some of you need to live in the real world and grow up a little.

Anyone thought that the player and clubs would of been aware of the situation and it was always intended he came to town but Villa had agreement to buy him back and make 5 million, that's what the contract was there for and helps with their profit and loss. Would not surprise me in the slightest if he is signed permenant as intended and knew he just had to be at Villa until Jan, it's happened before and he is a player in Mck mould a solid, young left winger and gives us 2 excellent left wingers in J Clarke and Phillogene to rotate and what impact either would have.

Szmodicks then in 10 role and rotate with Broadhead and new striker and experienced midfielder to play with Cajuste once Phillips goes and Morsy retires.

If we can get a Trippier for RB we be looking good and I still feel Burgess will come back in but Woolfeden has done well.

Sell Burns, Chaplin, Hamadi, H Clarke maybe.

It's interesting but Philogene in my opinion be great signing for us.

I also thought if it wouldn't be out of towns realm to get Rashford on loam, Mckenna knows him well and Phillips is international friend maybe the move do him good, I'm not bug fan as I think he lazy but can't deny his quality, I would prefer Almiron on a permenant or Championship Maja from West Brom looks good.

Just opinions.

No thank you. If he didn't want to come here before he can stew in the Villa reserves. We'll find other options.

Just a couple of things to note....I trust McKenna's judgement on this....
Philogene was excellent for Hull last year...plus he would have built up a good relationship with Delap (who whilst wouldn't have any direct involvement in any bid) must surly have given feedback to the management team in terms of Philogenes character etc...

BathwickBlue Exactly, he has no loyalty to us and was offered a 5 year deal with his old club, probably on more money, and with a chance to play in the Champions League. We are probably a better fit for his development, but he didn't owe us anything. A loan sounds more than sensible as there would be no liability if we go down. It's up to KM if he sees the value of this potential move or not.

I trust KMcK on this one plus there's the added bonus of a good relationship with Liam Delap from their time together at Hull and with England U21.

A fancy Barcelona to swoop in at the last moment to scupper the deal though. Lol

On a permanent yes, on a loan no.

I'm not sure people understand how transfers/options/obligations work. Irrespective of all the obligations between clubs based on previous transfers etc, none of these oblige a player to sign for anyone, it's his freedom of labour. They simply allow a club an opportunity, to match, outbid, provide first preference or whatever. The player ultimately has the final choice where to go. He went to Villa, his call and I'm sure he's well paid, and was maybe promised game time. If he wants to come here great, and I'll back him 100%, but don't don't be hoodwinked into thinking he was desperate to pull a blue shirt, if he was he'd have come here.

He is not an Ipswich Fan!!! Any of us in the same circumstances would probably choose Villa if we weren’t Town fans. The level of emotional maturity and intelligence on here is depressingly low.

Just spoken to a Villa mate, if it was the same Philogene that played for Hull yes, but he has not played many minutes for Villa and reckon he would need a full pre season under McK to get the best out of him. We need someone who is fit and ready for a full 90 minutes, not many of them available.

A simple no thank you from me. He was promised first team football at Villa - now they want to move him on again. Is he any better than Clarke, Ogbene, Szmodics, Hutchinson, Burns?

What I've seen for him for Villa this season he seems off the pace with erratic tackles and petulant temper - not for me.

He impressed for Hull but that was in the championship but that is no where near the standard of the Premier league ask Jack Clarke. Buying from the championship hasn't been a rip roaring success has it and Keiran McKenna hinted to this a couple of weeks ago stating our recruitment has to be wider spread to compete well in the Premier league Brentford, Bournemouth, Brighton etc. have purchased good players from the continent where you get better value for money. Players from the championship generally find it very hard physically in the Premier league.

TimmyH. Considering hes hardly played for villa, I dont see how you can make that judgement. And how many times have you seen villa play when He has anyway?

I thanks, chance not taken and has done nothing all season.
We must have better possible options we’ve worked on.

Juanforthemoney added 20:09 - Jan 2
I think we should use the money on better players who actually want to join the club.

blueboy1981 added 20:21 - Jan 2
Who said he didn’t want to join us ? - he didn’t at any point to my knowledge - Villa held the advantage at the time to sign him.
Players have much to consider when signing, some people conveniently overlook that.
Equally Time passes and changes much !
He fits the Bill now, so don’t be so petty, and hold what’s past against him !
