Very few completely write their own stuff but he writes and co-writes

He 'co-wrote' Angels with two other chaps. Always brings a tear to my eye, that one.
You top 3 British lyricists on 16:35 - Jul 21 with 6117 views | feelingblue | I'd have the first two right up there, but Paul Heaton??? Mick Jagger, Morrissey, Richard Thompson, Pete Townshend, Cat Stevens, Ian Dury, Bryan Ferry, Bernie Taupin, Sandy Denny, Jerry Dammers, to name just a few who are in a different class?
You top 3 British lyricists on 16:58 - Jul 21 with 6082 views | Coastalblue | Agree with a few here and can't think of a top three for me but Chris Dyfford would probably be in there. Paul Heaton's new album is bloody dreary.

I think Paul Heston is very much in the tradition of Ray Davies in the way he writes observational lyrics.

Sir Ray wrote some great observational lyrics, and also some great shouting rock lyrics - All Day and All of the Night, You Really Got Me, etc. Each to his own, but I find Heatons lyrics smug, smarty pants and often twee. No offence intended!

You top 3 British lyricists on 17:55 - Jul 21 with 6022 views | connorscontract | I know many will see the name and be out off by his politics, but Billy Bragg's other string to his how is some very poignant, often painful and usually funny and clever writing about the humanities and intimates of human relationships. St Swithin's Day is my favourite. He takes the old English folk saying about sun or rain on St Swithin's Day lasting and weaves a plaintive song to lost love via a railway station and multiple extended metaphors. And he was only in his early 20's when he did it.

John Cooper Clarke is a great shout. How did I forget him. Saw him live two years ago and his renditions of Chicken Town and Beasley Street were magnificent. Whoever said Billy Bragg is spot on as well.

He's not very 'singy' so I wasn't sure. Yep, Billy Bragg for sure.
