Even the lesser one has a queue today!

The queue is at its worst on a friday night when you need a London-registered 4x4 just to get in. Aldeburgh has been grim for years but nowhere near as bad as Orford with its faux croissant shop and 3rd rate seafood restaurant - at least a few suffolk peop!e live in aldeburgh.

I was going to say to where but then remembered the inland staff quarters.......not so much upstairs downstairs as on coast off coast......now off there to finish some hedges! We are well off coast!

Very, Very Sorry but I feel the need to completely disagree with you about the standard of establishments in Orford. Pump St Bakery, Pinney's at the Oysterage and the Crown and Castle are three of the finest eating establishments you will find in East Anglia. If you want to add David Grimwood's Froize and The Unruly Pig (both not far away) then you can have culinary heaven......

I live in Tunstall, Aldeburgh and Orford are well known around here for being full of holidaymakers and Londoners. Best avoided. Woodbridge is the best place around here, and if you want a beach side place to visit, go somewhere quiet like Bawdsey, Shingle Street, Sizewell or Dunwich.

Add Snape on to the list of yuppies. The maltings is technically in Tunstall anyway.

And yet they aren't. Both owned by the same people - it's a nice little monopoly that won't allow any fish n chip competition in Aldeburgh. But the one in the middle of the High Street just isn't as good as the other one for some reason.

I was born in Blaxhall nearby and grew up there, the houses near us one by one got bought as second homes. Threre were three village shops too! Some proper characters in the village as well.

The Maltings - used to work there and it was bad enough 25 years ago but went a few weeks back and it was more like a Gatwick overflow car park, shame as it’s a stunning location.

You need to get out more. And remember that Orford is a small village isolated on the coast. The Froize is an expensivebuffet emporium geared at fleecing pensioners - which it does very expensively and somewhat charmingly. Pinney's is average at best - overpriced and downright poor for what it is. Try Southwold for better seafood. And Dunwich for better fish and chips. And aldior lidl for better croissants.

I raise your Aldeburgh and Orford with a Walberswick...

and yes the Pump Street bakery is overpriced and doesnt do customer service because they deal with people all day who literally you stand behind them in the queue for an eccles cake, and they ask what type of flour its made with.

and Aldeburgh, last time I went there, and we went to the other chip shop because its exactly the same and the queue was stupid at the "famous" one, there was a guy in an Ferrari cabriolet who was just driving around in loops, like he was driving a Vauxhall Nova round the one way system !?!

but there you go two weeks from now theyll all turn up at Snape for the food festival and Ive been there and congratulate themselves its costing less than a shop at Harrods.

Truth is that Southwold, Walberwick, Dunwich, Thorpeness, Aldeburgh and Orford are all lovely places. Those of us fortunate to live nearby really are spoilt for choice.

BTW, The Kings Head in Orford does some wonderful food, especially on its themed evenings - excellent quality over 4-5 huge courses. I’m seldom beaten by quantity, but I was there!

Shame the Smoke House closed down - that really was something different and special.

The Froize - worth going there just to chat to David. Encyclopeadic on his knowledge of local food sources.

And thte Aldeburgh Food Festival? I’ll be there! A great day out and so much food to sample.

Can’t be bothered with the chips in Aldeburgh. Overated. Both shops owned by the same people. Aldeburgh itself is full of Porsche Cayennes, hoity toity, oh I say old chap, My big house in Twickenham, middle class, hoi poloi...
Basically all the upper middle class flotsam and jetsam that wash up from the Thames go there coz it’s trendy.

Classist!

But in all seriousness, all those hoity toity people keep a lot of people and industry going in the area. Builders, mechanic, plumbers, sparkies, cleaners, gardeners, etc. Several exist almost exclusively on the custom of the visitors from London.

There is also a serious problem with house prices and natives being priced out of where they grow up.

Let alone services deteriorating and councils seeing £ signs for housing developments and the infrastructure suffering.

The natives can go to Leiston, Tunstall or Rendlesham. Plenty of housing supply there.

Yep that's the same as is happening all around here mate. I can look out my window now and see 4 or 5 holiday homes, yet 10-15years ago the village was buzzing, we had a shop, a decent pub, everyone knew each other, yet now I often walk the dog and see people I've never seen and they don't talk.

I don't have a problem with Aldeburgh, Orford or anywhere like that as places because they're really nice, I don't mind the people who move from elsewhere and integrate into the community, it's the ones who don't talk, don't socialise and are just generally rude. Far too many round here.

I didn't enjoy living and working up there, it wasn't everyone but there were too many a*seholes talking down to me like I was their servant for my liking. Thorpeness Regatta was the absolute worst, lot of jumped-up entitled little tw@ts. Rude and arrogant, even taking the piss out of the locals because of their accents.
