Political discussion as a standard 17:20 - Sep 26 with 4926 viewswkj

This isn't a dig at anyone, or even the broader discussion of politics on TWTD, but a wider look at the way the world communicates politics. Isn't it almost heartbreaking how the most engaging discussions stem from someone posing criticism of an opposing point of view evolving into heated debate, rather than people highlighting the positives of someone they support then evolving into political debate.

I am in no way immune to this myself, but it is staggering how this conduct is 'the norm' for the politicians, and how it filters down to the civilians too. I am not trying to start a revolution here, but surely someone, somewhere, happens to be more emboldened by the good they see in their own party rather than the vitriol they hold for the other.

Sounds familiar.

Maybe more of one of these

Either way, this is a non-football thread. Shame on you.

Agreed.

Just for example, we have rarely if ever seen a discussion of the positives from being part of the EU. The positives of a socialist/social democratic balance to free-market capitalism. A sustainable and equitable world economy. Looking forward to the future rather than fearing it.

With this adversarial and defensive politics, we make simple and poorer choices seem like a way forward. Regardless of where that takes us.

It does sound like you could make a case for running as an independent.

You may have found the niche in politics the UK craves in that case, maybe the J2 party should form.

I tried to start a political party on here a year or two ago - lots of people expressed interest, but only one other was prepared to do anything! (I needed someone with a background in economics to get going, as I lack that, & its clearly fundamental).

All I'm sayin', J2, is that I feel enough people don't participate or even inform themselves enough about our democracy. Democracy is a responsibility. How little people knew about our relationship with the EU, and still do, is a case in point.

We owe it to each other to know this stuff and to act where we can.

Otherwise it's just like the fckng X-Factor, where everyone sits back on the couch and votes for the least worst thing.

Didn't really mean it as a dig at you but people aren't getting enough out of what they're allowed or could make happen, with effort.

‘We owe it to each other to know this stuff and to act where we can.‘

But surely if someone doesn’t feel they’re informed on an issue or disagrees with all parties, choosing to not vote is the responsible thing in that situation.

If I could turn back time, I would never in a million years have voted on the referendum. I said at the time that neither side had convinced me and I was, effectively, guessing. I don’t blame myself for that either. It should be the responsibility of the so-called experts (MPs) to tell me what I’m voting for and why I should vote for them. Instead they spend their time slagging off their opposition without actually bothering to put up a sensible argument for themselves.

Some politician, can't recall who, said on R5l this a.m. that one tip he'd been given by some former Great & Good, was to imagine you were holding the hand of a 4-year old child while you spoke. Not sure about that particular age, I'd have thought maybe a 10-year old better, but take his point, and of course it would apply just as well to written comments.

The founder of the LeftyBumFest Party, Benters, only ever imparted one word of advice for the cabinet. That word was balls.

As a second year university student you can appreciate that information isn't always drip fed to you, there is a need to conduct further research too to aim for a first class of honours. That is very much like life, we cant always expect the answers to be on one place in order to make an informed decision, so the sensible thing to do is possibly not vote, or make a best judgement decision, or seek out more information and make a confident decision.

Of course the other option, like [redacted] said, is treat it like xfactor, something which I dare say a section of voters do.

So there is no singular answer, and one should strive not look at life in such a monochrome way, unless a 'pass 3' is enough.
