Derby and Keogh 18:15 - Oct 30 with 5421 views | Nthsuffolkblue | Apologies if posted elsewhere but this may be of interest to some. https://www.msn.com/en-gb/sport/football/derby-captain-richard-keogh-told-to-tak I don't get how they think they can threaten to sack him for gross misconduct if he does not accept the new contract offer. Surely the fact they are offering a contract means they have already decided it does not constitute gross misconduct. I have little sympathy for Keogh but find Derby's handling of this poor too. I presume that if Keogh so chooses, he could accept the reduced wage and sue Lawrence for loss of earnings. Probably limited chance of success for accepting getting in the vehicle knowing his state, though.

Derby and Keogh on 18:18 - Oct 30 with 4363 views | Mullet | Absolutely no sympathy for either party here. Derby are the worst club in the division for how they handle themselves. I feel sorry for the old boys that have been there since long before they descended into this scumbag way of doing things. That said all three players got off lightly in my opinion. Keogh possibly suffered most given his age and likelihood he’ll never be much use to a club again by the time he’s fit. But that’s about as far as I can extend any sort of pity towards him, in the real world he’d struggle to find employment without dropping several rungs down the ladder somewhere.

Indeed, when suffering most is having a 14 month break from a very good career and being asked to take a cut from your £1.3M pound-a-year contract, he is jolly lucky. To a large degree he has benefitted from modern car safety features for sure. He owes the designers of those big time.

In the real world, even with an enlightened employer, he'd be on half pay after six months sick absence, and no pay after twelve. No sympathy. He was no doubt as drunk as the others.

Indeed. You could argue for stripping him of the captaincy, but if he is to be sacked for it, so should the two who are actually pleading guilty to the criminal offences. If ever there was a case for unfair dismissal that must be one, assuming the report he has been sacked is true.

Decisions like this makes you realise that most football clubs are pretty small time businesses without proper in house expertise, despite big turnovers and highly paid staff. They’ll get destroyed by a good employment lawyer for how differently they’ve treated those who were worse offenders - how can they possibly explain away sacking him but not the 2 who were actually the law breakers. Their statement is laughably hypocritical

I’m not so sure. I suspect they have had very good advice on this. The fact that they have chosen not so sack other employees I suspect has no bearing at all on whether his conduct amounts to gross misconduct or not. In any case, reaching some kind of settlement with Keogh will likely be cheaper than paying out the remainder of his contract and expending time and effort on his rehab.

You suspect that. However you have no evidence they have had. Maybe they are chancing it in the hope that he accepts some coaching role with them and doesn't want to destroy the goodwill he has with the fans? He ought to sue both the club and Lawrence for everything he can get out of them - unfair dismissal from the club and injuries caused by driving under the influence. He should have known better than to get into the car with them but there is no way the club should be able to get away with treating him worse than the drivers. Perhaps the spineless EFL will look at it, decide their actions have brought the game into disrepute and ban Lawrence and Bennet for 14 months too. I wonder if Derby would cut their wages or threaten to sack them then as well.

There is no way any firm will dismiss an employee with a potential claim value of £2m without having good specialist advice, the advice would have come from a Tier 1 firm almost certainly with an opinion from counsel of several years call. Of course I can’t be sure, but I know how these things work from being on the advisor side of things.
