Tallin, Riga, Vilnius, Bratislava, Wroclaw.... 08:18 - Jan 8 with 2735 viewsStochesStotasBlewe

....or any other Baltic/Central/East European Cities to visit for 3 nights in June. Will be travelling with my 20 year old son and as we went to Krakow last summer and had a great time, would like to visit the old Eastern bloc again. Must be fairly cheap(ish) and easily accessible.
Recommendations please to the above or suitable alternatives.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

I didn't know this until I got back, but if you went to Bratislava you can train to Vienna in one hour. I'm sure someone said they're the 2 closest capital cities in the World (although I couldn't tell you if that was 100% correct or not).

But from what people are saying, doesn't look like Bratislava is any good, and Vienna is just about tolerable.

Vienna to Budapest isn't a particularly long train ride either

Also, if you fancy a bit of Eastern European vibe crossed with a lovely southern European climate you could do a lot worse than Croatia. Great place.

That’s a possibility later in the year with Mrs Pinewood, though I did venture there when it was the former Yugoslavia. Stunning scenery and Dubrovnik was lovely.

Only an hour from Vienna to Sopron which is a lovely little place in Hungary with good wine and nice for the day.

Lovely converted monastery you can stay in as well, the restaurant decor is something else:

I've been a few times now, it's absolutely beautiful. I love it there.

Love Croatia, I've spent a lot of time there, it's an amazing country. Great picturesque towns & cities, beautiful islands & countryside. Plitvice lakes are stunning. A friend of mine lives in Rovinj, that's a great spot up in the north on the coast. Only thing I would change about Croatia is the cuisine is pretty average relative to a lot of European countries.

Would second all those who have mentioned Budapest, just an incredible city that caters to every taste.
Was also very fond of Gdynia/Gdansk/Sopot when I was there and like you say Krakow is great.

The destinationI visited last year that took me totally by surprise was Tbilisi. Not the easiest to get to but absolutely loved the place, the people, the food and most certainly the wine. They are also experiencing a craft beer craze and it's cheap!

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it there, but probably not somewhere I would rush back to in a hurry.

It's one of the few destinations in Europe I'd happily move to.
Absolutely love the place.

I've not been to Riga, but would suggest a mixed trip. Flight to Helsinki, ferry to Tallinn and back, train to St Petersburg and back (train takes about 3 hours). Three totally different places and experiences. There's a hotel in Helsinki, near the ferry terminal, that is converted out of an old prison, it's superb!

The one place I'd certainly move to is Berlin. Can quite honestly say it was the best weekend away I've ever had.

Spent a couple of months cycling though the new EU states in 2004, so my info is a bit dated.

But, for me on a scale of Warsaw to Krakow being 3 and 9 on a 10-point scale,
I'd give Tallinn a firm 9, but nothing special about the rest of Estonia particularly, or the outskirts of Tallinn.
I'd put Prague at 8, 9 if you can get inside some more exclusive establishments (less if in Feb - Mar as the atmosphere's a bit fuggy due to brown coal burning); interesting local towns to visit, too.
Riga at 8 or 9 - loads to do, too much to drink;
Ljubljana at 8 on a bike (in August); rest of Slovenia is very interesting, too, including lovely (and comparatively cheap) alpine villages (except the coast - there isn't much - go to Croatia instead);
Bratislava at 6 or 7 on a bike, but probably less elsewise.
Buda and Pest at 6 or 7 - surrounding country good, though;
Vilnius a 4 (not impressed), though the surrounding country might make me shift to a 5.
Warsaw 3. I got straight back on my bike and cycled to Bialowieza and then Lithuania.

I had considered Gdansk, but continued the trip through Lithuania instead.

You might also consider Malta for a 3-day trip, and you'd get to see much of the lovely island.

All of these without needing a visa this year only, offer ends soon !

Of the countries above, I'd go back to Slovenia and Poland at the drop of a hat. And I'd consider living in Riga if I could.

Oh, and Malta is likely to stay a bit more Brit-friendly in terms of visas, I would reckon. So maybe one for 2021 and beyond.

(I've not included Berlin 9 , Vienna 8 ... or other places in my one-mark-encompasses-all system above)
