The Sun nonsense has begun 22:50 - Feb 2 with 14936 viewstractordownsouth

https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/10873187/keir-starmer-earns-legal-advice-mp-pay/

It's hilarious how throughout every election, the right wing press falsely claims that Labour have a vendetta against the rich and people who work hard yet when Starmer earns good money for being a lawyer then that's awful too. I didn't see the outrage when George Osborne took a job at BlackRock, earning 600k for 2 days a week work...

The quote from Tory MP David Morris claiming this means Starmer is "out of touch" is ridiculous... the bloke is the son of a nurse and worked his way up, it's not as if he was born with a silver spoon. And meanwhile Morris' wiki page shows that he denies child poverty in his own constituency. Classy.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Morris_(Conservative_politician)

Proves they'll dig up any old nonsense...

We have an imbalance of media ownership/bias in this country. The Tory biased media is far more powerful and has a wider circulation than those who support Labour.

If you look at the Mirror’s (pro Labour) coverage of Johnson’s outside income it is far more sensationalist than the article you linked or that of the Guardian.

The biggest take I get from this is that although there has always been an imbalance as long as I can remember, there is no longer a Tory equivalent of the Guardian. The Telegraph has completely dumbed down to the level of the Mail or the Express.
[Post edited 3 Feb 2020 9:24]

Yeah I'd agree with that, I don't like the sensationalist coverage of the Mirror, but as you say, its circulation is far less.

I think The Times is relatively objective and has decent quality journalism on the Tory side, but The Telegraph has just become a Boris sh1trag.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, your brand of 'politics' disgusts me. And in fact it's this sort of stuff that turns people off of politics. I dream of a day when politics is about what's best for the country, but it isn't and never will be. It's all about your side winning, at all costs.

How is it my brand of politics? I gave an honest answer to Herbie’s question why the sun didn’t go hard in the Tories who were claiming far more. It’s because the a Sun is a Tory supporting paper. Very biased in its coverage.

Can you please stop trying to derail a thread where grown ups are attempting to converse in a civil manner? Thanks in advance.

The high horse as well now. The full repertoire.

I agree with what people are complaining about so not much to add. And obviously you know that I've been quite heavily involved in talking about Labour and smear campaigns for the past few years.

But here you are defending your very own MO with a narrow definition. Of course, I'm going to have a dig.

And I've said it's s poor article.

It's also one which wouldn't have been written if he wasn't going for leader - that's the equivalence, not the scale of the issue or the fact there isn't really an issue with Starmer at all.

I think it's wishful thinking to believe that either side aren't going to publish things along these lines, although I fully agree the Sun and the Daily Mail are far worse offenders.

But the story on Johnson would always have been a story since MPs outside earnings would always be a matter of public interest. The press didn't have to do much with their raw data to make a story as Johnson's earnings were the highest by a considerable margin. There is no manufacturing a story there in the way there is with the Sun article. As I said before, it's a false equivalence.

You could also throw in the Jennifer Arcuri story. Had that been the leader of the Labour party then the Sun would have gone balls deep on it every day.

Indeed. Imagine if Sadiq Khan had been doing those kind of favours for his side piece, the right wing press would have lost its mind. I doubt he'd still be in office.

I'm not just talking about one post though, obviously. I'm talking about your years of political posting on here. It's all about smear, scandal, throwing some mud in the hope it will stick and swerving when challenged on it. 95% of your political posting is this sort of stuff, the other 5% being about actual policies.

And trying to claim this isn't a smear is all part of the game. It's wrong IMO, isn't in the interests of our country, and turns people off (from politics as a whole and your posting in particular on here).

You've had grief from countless people on here over the years in regards to political posting. Have you ever thought maybe you're going about it the wrong way?

I bet Bloots will downarrow this.

If you take away circulation numbers, the Corbyn supporting media outlets like the Canary and Norvara are running far more negative stories in the three leadership candidates who aren’t RLB.

Nowhere near the circulation of the Sun but a massive social media circulation to Labour members who have the vote.

Lisa Nandy in particular is getting it daily from the likes of Bastani and Mendoza. Even putting out videos that go viral accusing Lisa Nandy of not voting against Tory cuts (she was having a baby at the time).

With the traditional press having far less influence I maybe it’s time to start looking at social media reporting?

Edit. The latest attack on Nandy from Aaron Bastardi; she met Tony Blair once.

There is a fundamental difference here.

Stuuf that has been published about Johnson is fair and accurate.... as with the Acuri and alleged Russian funding. Stories that appear to have been shoved aside.

The Stramer is not that. It is cobbling together quite legitimate stuff to put some negative spin on it

Pointing out the hypocricy of Prince Charles taking a helicopter flight to attend a climate conference has merit. Questioning his suitabilty to be the next monarch because his suits are not made i the UK, his staff are not the best paid or that his wife has a dress allowance (?) does not.

The latter is merely and attempt to sway public opinion through distortion of facts.

I think I’ll “swerve” addressing this post until the EHRC reports in a few months time.

Then we can discuss whether 95% of what I have posted has been smear and mud throwing.

Still, at least when it's posted on here in three days time via the Express by Hampstead we can link back to this post.

I read neither the Express or the Sun.

The article is poor I agree. This is why I read only a very small amount if the written press.

Did you see the piece, I think it was the BBC, were Starmer stated that if he were PM he would ignore the referendum vote and allow free movement of people from the EU?

That I thought rather self-defeating. Surely a well written and focussed immigration system will give us all we need. Why go back to something we've just left?

That does seem rather odd.

Anyhow, back to your point, I agree it is a poor piece of journalism and something I would give directly to my worms - having said that they may just pass it by as well. Worms too can read.....bet you didn't know that!

Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me. Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing. Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial. Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid. Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

Because immigration is a net benefit and doesn't actually significantly impact on wages, despite this being widely accepted as fact.

The fact that you're swerving all points only proves mine. That's fine, I didn't expect a leopard to change its spots. It's your loss. Agreed. Although arguably the biggest misleading statement of the last few years is that free movement is "uncontrolled"...

The EU Citizen Travel Directive states that people can be deported after 3 months if they don't have a job or enough money to support themselves. They enact these rules in countries like Belgium. Sounds like quite a lot of control to me.
