Away kit history 17:33 - Apr 21 with 4966 viewsgainsboroughblue

Does anybody know (I'm hoping PJH reads this) what our away kit history pre-1970s was?

I know we've had the yellow/blue which was worn early to late 70's followed by the white/black, with what followed afterwards, but what was the change colours of choice before that?

TV was black and white before then, so the colour of strips didn't matter.

Not really sure on what colours our away kit has been in the distinct past. I do know that the FA insisted on clubs having a set of white kits to act as an away kit in case of a clash.

Think we used to wear blue and white strips so logically Ipswich would have had to be a different colour to white back in the day.

I know that we played in red shirts in my first ever away game at WBA and I think the shorts were white and the socks green!
The socks bit might just be my imagination/memory as a then 10 year old, they might have been red or I might have been colour blind.

The season after the title I saw us at Birmingham and we certainly had red shirts there and I think white shorts but not certain about colour of socks.

Just looking through some ITFC books covering the 1960's there is a photo from a game at Portsmouth which although in black & white would suggest that we had red shirts, black shorts and red socks.

At Man City in the F.A. Cup in 1967 we played in all white as per Leeds/Real Madrid.

There used to always be a pre season game between teams comprising first team defence and reserve forwards against reserve defence and first team forwards and the colours for one of those teams was always red shirts.

We had yellow shirts, blue shorts and yellow socks at Chelsea in 1969/70.

So basically our away shirts were red throughout most of the 1960's but yellow by the end of the 60's.

I couldn't find all the away kits on historicalkits.co.uk.

And not only that, in their 'iconic away kits' page, they list these 2 as our supposedly iconic away kits.

Don't see how either of those are more iconic than these:

Plain yellow round neck with no blue trim in the 1960’s.

That's desktop screensaver material.

I also wondered if the yellow away shirt coincided with the badge change as the outline was yellow.

And on that, was the orange third shirt in the 80s a nod to our Dutch boys who were here?

I have this shirt, it's a match worn Allan Hunter shirt. I've been offered 400 by a football collector website.

I'm sure it's worth that but to rich for me to wear around my house in my joggers.

I did though find this and I'm just about to buy!

Personally I prefer yellow to red and that includes on the badge, in fact our red badge symbolises our decline since the 80's

I'd go back to a Yellow Badge and have an East Anglian flag on our back collars. I'd encourage all East Anglian clubs to sport the flag, much as the Welsh Clubs did at one point but that's just me

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

1962-64 plain red
1964-65 white/ blue collar
1969-73 yellow
1972-75 yellow blue v-neck

Yellow shirts/ black shorts late 60s / early 70s. This became yellow and blue.

Check out the Chelsea goal that never was at Stamford Bridge to see the yellow and black kit in action.

Poll: Would you support a permanent return to the old yellow Town badge?
