The 5 bands/ acts you listened to most at high school. on 10:25 - Apr 30 by Lord_Lucan | High School is a long time for a kid and people change massively over 5 years, At the start of high school I was listening to Abba and Queen. I have decided to list what I was listening to in the final couple of years - 4th / 5th form. The Jam The Who Stranglers The Chords Purple Hearts Special mention to AC/DC who were a constant secret pain in my Mod life. |
There a bit of rocker screaming to get out 🤟

I think Buzzcocks and Sham would be in my 6 - 10 list along with XTC The Buzzcocks were closet Mods really, I bumped into Steve Diggle a few years back on a boat going up the Thames watching a Sex Pistols tribute band. It was the same boat that The Pistols played on the Thames in 1977 before getting arrested by the River Filth. Sham69, what can I say? That's Life album is brilliant.

I must say that this was a constant problem. As you remember back then you simply could not be anything inbetween, a glance at my record collection would have meant losing Ace Face status!! Nowadays I would be happy watching AC/DC resplendent in a boating blazer.

The 5 bands/ acts you listened to most at high school. on 11:27 - Apr 30 by Lord_Lucan | Nice mix NSO, I have listened to all of those relentlessly over time although I was never a huge fan of Quo. I did though recently read Francis Rossi's autobiography (highly recommended) and started to listen to the music again and actually they are better than people think. Hope you are well by the way. |
Status Quo Live 1977 is one of the best live albums ever made, in my totally biased opinion and a few sane people’s too. A double album that’s worth a listen. At that time they had the original Frantic Four line up and hadn’t copped out. A proper live band, I saw them live for the first time that year and it was mental. As one music paper described, it was like having you brain pulled down through your nostrils.

The 5 bands/ acts you listened to most at high school. on 12:50 - Apr 30 by Northstandoldie | Quo were (and are) a lot more diverse than folks think, they are not the '3 chord wonders' that people say. As for the others I included both Ian Dury and Squeeze because of their lyrics, Difford and Tillbrook were one of the best songwriting duos out there. The Stranglers were different..... a punk band that could actually play Greenwood on the keyboards was a master. I couldn't leave the pistols out... as a punk they stood for everything our generation felt at the time. As for myself I'm ok if extremely bored what with my Copd and the fact my job entailed me delivering medication to both care homes and joe public I was always going to be told to self-isolate and that's the case... gives me a chance to catch up on boxsets! Worst thing is... I can't go fishing!! |
The fish have asked me to give you a message. They say that they are quite happy.

Quo were the band that first weaned me onto 'proper' music (not chart crap) when I was about 9 or 10. I put them on my list just for that reason, but was pretty soon on to Maiden and Metallica.

The 5 bands/ acts you listened to most at high school. on 10:10 - Apr 30 by Guthrum | Genres mainly - New Romantic, rock/metal, folk and '60s. Didn't start getting into specific bands until I was in the 6th Form, when it was Lou Reed/Velvet Underground, Jethro Tull, Jefferson Airplane, Sisters Of Mercy, The Beatles. |
Deep Purple, Led Zep, Edgar Broughton Band, Ten years After, Genesis all the great rock bands. Saw loads live around Suffolk and Essex. On our Lambrettas from Ipswich to Essex Uni, Felixtowe Pier Pavilion, the Edmonton Sundown North London. Anyone go to the Weeley Rock Festival? Great times.

I liked Iron Maiden and Metallica too, but never saw them live. Other bands I enjoyed at the time were Thin Lizzy (deafening live) and Deep Purple. While I like many different genres of music I’ve always liked bands with no nonsense raw energy. Those were the days of small venues, mouldy old cinemas, warm flat beer if you could get any (and pitch up with a few inside in case you couldn’t), the waft of cigarettes and other stuff, speakers from the stage to the roof stacked up, high tech? a spotlight if you were lucky. The band tooling on when they were ready. Happy days
