Frank Lampard didn’t fancy the challenge here then. 10:09 - May 18 with 4102 views | SitfcB | So, Hurst wasn’t the number one man then? Would’ve been interesting to see Lampard here I think. [Post edited 18 May 2020 10:10]

Frank Lampard didn’t fancy the challenge here then. on 11:10 - May 18 by SitfcB | What reason would Harry have to make up that little nugget of information? |
Harry is an inveterate liar, a crook and very keen on promoting his own myth?

Frank Lampard didn’t fancy the challenge here then. on 10:44 - May 18 by PhilTWTD | Lampard was on the shortlist, he impressed ME, and the lack of money was an issue, but I'm confident he was never offered the job. The last four, incidentally, were Hurst, Lampard, Graham Potter and Jack Ross.

That's a typo I'm guessing and should read Lampard rather than Lambert? A mate of mine knows Frank from his work at Sky and he confirmed that the budget, or lack of, was the issue.

Thanks Phil, that clears that up...maybe the passage of time is eroding Harry's mind? I cannot help but feel that this period was our 'sliding doors' moment. I know I'm stating the obvious, but how different our fortunes could have turned out if another option had been taken...

Frank Lampard didn’t fancy the challenge here then. on 11:10 - May 18 by Swansea_Blue | I remember there were one or two posters from the Shrewsbury area who said we should avoid him. I was very much neutral as knew nothing about him, but we were warned. I wanted a footballing man and an emotionally intelligent people's person, rather than specifically a younger manager. Had I known at the time that Potter was interested, it would have been a no brainer. |
He obviously impressed ME at interview for whatever reason. I'd be surprised if any Shrewsbury fans had too many bad words to say considering he took them from relegation battlers to the verge of auto promotion, a play off final and a Leasing.Com final at Wembley in one year on f*ck all budget. No one was offered it other than Hurst. They were waiting on Hurst and Shrewsbury's season to come to an end so they could hold formal talks before a decision was made. To clarify, last four were Hurst, Potter, Ross and Lampard.

Think he's probably just misremembering the situation. FL may well have been given the impression he was close to getting it, of course, although he underplayed it when he spoke about it.

Frank Lampard didn’t fancy the challenge here then. on 11:06 - May 18 by BlueBadger | Part of the problem we had with Hurst was the lack of a strong DoF to say 'actually, I think just 2 or three promising lads from the third division is enough Paul'. The other part was that he was crap. |
Absolutely - but like all managers under ME, he was given carte blanche to do as he liked with little scrutiny due to the lack of structure in place and ME not being about regularly enough. Keane tore the club apart and Hurst did so again after MM had steadied the ship. He came in like a bull in a China shop. I remember thinking after his comments following the Braintree friendly, "he's either going to revolutionise this club or be gone by Christmas" and it was the latter.

If I remember rightly, the comments were about how he set Shrewsbury up and possibly his general approach. I'm not denying he did well with Shrewsbury, so it was a logical appointment from that point of view.

Frank Lampard didn’t fancy the challenge here then. on 10:51 - May 18 by SitfcB | He was hardly going to say “I’m absolutely delighted to get my 2nd/3rd choice man” was he. Whoever was appointed would’ve been ‘first choice’. I reckon the order was... Lampard Ross Hurst |
I think it's notable that ME waited on Hurst in the manner he did. I think it was Hurst's job to lose, to be honest. Lampard's exit from the race was before Hurst would have been formally spoken to so I don't think Marcus would have been making any offers at that point.

Probably gave Evans all the lines he gave to the press about trying to inspire players to be the best that they can be and better than they have striven to be, but likely didn't mention that part of his policy to achieve this would be to belittle everyone on arrival and inspire young players like Folami and Morris by telling them they're not going to be part of the team photo "to keep them hungry", because that won't come across as a slap in the face to a couple of youngsters will it, Paul? Notice that he and Doig sit front and centre of the photo with Chambers in the middle row behind them. Power tripping idiots....

Alex Bruce tells an interesting story on his podcast interview yesterday about how Keane had him in his office in pre-season telling him he was in his plans. Then he walked out and new squad numbers were on the wall outside - his number 5 had been taken off him and he was given number 36. Man management at its finest.

No surprise there sadly. PH had to get rid of the better players here to create a semblance of a transfer kitty, no surprise FL avoided us like the plague.

The big question is would Lampard have been able to bring in better players than Hurst did if he'd sold Waghorn, Garner and Webster? It's a moot point, because I think Waghorn would have likely stayed under Lampard, unless he turned out to be as big a prick as Hurst was. I am sure though that the dross we brought in under Hurst would never have darkened our doors, even if Lampard had had to use his own judgement while wheeler-dealing.

Without a doubt, but the issue would be whether we could afford to bring those same loan players in like he did at Derby. Those Chelsea lads will be on a fair amount even with limited first team experience. Someone like FL probably would've enticed Waghorn and McGoldrick to stay just because of who is and what he has achieved in the game. If true, then FL made the right choice not to join us, it's sad really. Appreciate it would've been a gamble, but I think it would've benefited the club in many ways on and off the pitch making that appointment, but hindsight is a wonderful thing.
