Isn't there an argument that in order to know ourselves truly we must know our history?

Pieces of Cinematic art are being removed from public consumption.
I'm finding your stance a bit inconsistent, on one hand you're telling me that you think things shouldn't have been removed and that a sensible discussion is needed and then on the other hand you're giving churlish responses to be raising the point that editing or removing a piece of art is like removing it from history.
I get that the argument put forward might seem a little base/rudimentary but it opens up the discussion that you said was required.
It's important that moving forwards we show more proportional representation in our media and that BAME people and their culture isn't just used for cheap laughs or represented in derogatory and caricature type ways, but that's what has happened over the last 60/70 years in these art forms and to remove them from gaze is simply a form of whitewashing the past. Do you recognise the difference between "blackface" as in the B&W minstrels type caricature, and (for instance) the Bo Selecta Craig David?
Do we say that a comedian (as it is often in that field the issue now arises) can never send up someone of different race- even when the motive or joke is entirely unconnected with race? How about dressing up as the opposite gender? Why is that different?
I suggest it is different because of the history of "blackface". Which is why there may well be merit in drawing a distinction between that, and other examples. |
