Free school meals hypocrisy on 14:55 - Jun 16 by mrshallisfit | Not mad. Just a bit thick. You've just had over 3 months where kids would have been in school but arent. This must have impacted disproportionately on the very poorest and disadvantaged. |
Thanks for putting that so well. I shall remember to treat you with same contempt next time you ask a question. Cnt

Are you annoyed that poor kids are being given money for food? I’m sure that’s not your point but that’s a bit how it’s coming across.

He thinks the parents will spend it on beer and fags. There are a lot of poor families in this country who genuinely struggle to feed themselves, yet those who have never struggled, seem to think they are all on drugs and alcohol.

The national voucher scheme vouchers can’t be used on age restricted products, I’ve no idea what other vouchers they’re referring to but they certainly aren’t the ones being given by the government, as their own guidelines confirm. You’ve obviously completely fallen for the rather blatant dog whistling from the express and the star though. Which is a shame, I would have expected more from you.

….and even brought up in council meetings around the UK. http://www.mywelshpool.co.uk/viewernews/ArticleId/18783 If you honestly think that no parents would try and take advantage of the scheme then you are extremely deluded. Even in these "woke" times, you are able to question the man in the street's integrity you know. And of course everyone follows government guidelines...…..good lord. And now you’ve used the term ‘woke’ and you’re not even taking the p1ss. Jesus. Of course some people will try and abuse the system but they’re not able to. That’s the whole point, kids without the luxury of ‘nice’ parents will be able to eat. Those people will buy their booze and fags come what may but this way maybe they’ll get some food too. Even if a small percentage of the parents somehow manage to circumvent the system is that a reason to deny all the others who don’t? To me it seems like further demonising of the poorest in our society who rely on benefits to feed their kids. The sort of nonsense I’d expect to see parroted from some of the more absurd posters of recent years but I find particularly depressing from one who I generally have a lot of time for. EDIT: and, obviously, it’s the retailers who follow the guidelines, not the shoppers. And I’ll think you’ll find they absolutely do follow them religiously. Hey ho. [Post edited 16 Jun 2020 20:15]

….and I've no doubt that the vast majority will be using them exactly as required. I guess my initial comment was really alluding to wider issues around what "luxuries" people spend their money on in times of need and what personal sacrifices people do or don't make when the chips are down. That's my point really.

Free school meals hypocrisy on 11:11 - Jun 16 by textbackup | am I going mad here, but why should the government give free school meals in the school holidays? if there is a summer school then yes fair enough.... |
Hi, I personally believe children should be given free meals during the school holidays. As stated in the UNCRC Article 24 states that children have the right to clean water and nutritious food and that the government should support families who are unable to do this, hence why schools provide free school meals during the holidays. If free meals weren't to be offered to children during the holidays this would simply be denying the child this right. It would also result in children going hungry and some cases potentially starving to death. The government are trying to tackle and support those families and their children who are disadvantaged and on low income paying jobs.

£15 should be enugh for..... on 10:41 - Jun 16 by CBBlue | Have to admit that's been my fear, I'm hoping there's some conditions attached to it but no idea if there is. Having had a near neighbour's (very young) son turn up at my house at all hours in the past saying they haven't had breakfast/lunch/dinner and knowing how much the mum drinks, smokes and the rest I have the opinion a certain percentage of benefits should be in food vouchers but I'm aware how that makes me look like a bit of a tory. |
Under the Children Act (and subsequent Acts which supplement it) all adults have a legal duty of care towards children if they know that they are suffering a form of abuse or neglect. You say "in the past" so assume this is no longer the case, but in the future I would strongly urge you, or anyone else who becomes aware of a child in need like this, to contact the school and ask to speak to the member of staff responsible for safeguarding and pass this on to them, if you are not comfortable going straight to social services. Small details can add to the overall picture that the school has regarding a child's welfare. The child deserves better than this and the Mum may actually need some support, and the school may be able to access it for her. I was aware of some very sad cases when Chair of Governors of a school, but in one case the school was able to help a mother to receive support dealing with drug and alcohol dependency issues and she found her way back into work and is now doing well, as are her children.
