I think REM wouldn't allow them to use it, what became the theme was written to sound like it. I seem to know a lot about this for reasons I'm not sure about.

I was exempting Three Lions as it became the National Anthem for a period of time.
I find the majority of their other material just bland wallpaper music.

The lead singers voice is a bit weak and certainly not to everyone's taste but Jolification by the Lightning Seeds is one of the most underrated albums of all time. As good if not better than a lot of the albums that came out around the Britpop era of the mid nineties.

Bands like Simply Red, Lighthouse family, Bluetones, Travis and even the Beautiful South(who I rate) I would say are blander.

Think they've said they hate it as well, was written as a bit of a joke, something along those lines. Quite liked them up to that album.

It was written as a joke.
I always thought It was a reponse to the "teach the world to sing" advert by Coca Cola.
Most US TV sitcoms, like the Brady Bunch and Partridge Family, had beautiful people with white teeth and annoyingly naive positive characters in them, whereas most americans who are not on TV or in Hollywood films are fat, somewhat ugly and loudmouth moaners.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

Up until 1991 absolutely. After that it's probably hard to call yourselves 'alternative' when you become one of the biggest selling bands in the world.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

Perhaps underrated for a reason?
I have no axe to grind, i just find them dull.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

Maybe or perhaps because they weren't considered cool like the likes of Blur, Oasis, the Charlatans, Pulp and others were so they didn't get the publicity or the hype.

Even though it's not my Favourite REM song I think Kate Pierson's voice complements Michael Stipe's really well. Also because it was such a big hit at the time and got a ridiculous amount of air play it became a bit of a sound track to the summer of 91. Whenever I hear the song it always takes me back to that time.
