don't trust Google et al.... 21:53 - Jul 5 with 2106 views | sparks | I have every privacy setting I can find set. I watched a car enthusiast video on YouTube this afternoon. The maker had a sponsorship and did a little promotion for an electric razor thing. For use on man bits... pretty specialised and a bit random but what the heck. If he can make few quid from the promotion it's fine by me. This evening my spam email contains an ad from the very same company. I struggle with the idea that is coincidence...

If so, change to "I do not accept" (or "read more") and then switch everything off except the essential ones. Since doing that, various ads have stopped tracking me. Most sites will remember, but with some you might need to keep renewing, esp after your device has downloaded updates.

I don't use a VPN at all, do techies think they should be used for online banking & similar sites?

better still there are some browsers that have a 'bank mode' that is they start up a new virtual environment each time that bank mode is invoked. https://support.avast.com/en-ae/article/Use-Bank-Mode So if you are worried about your banking details being compromised, this is a good way to go.

Ah, I didn't even consider the platform. Not sure if there are any browsers for MAC that have the same sort of functionality.

I didn't know (assuming what they said is correct) that what you are actually doing by checking that box is granting permission to the website to access your browsing history to see what you did prior to coming on their website. So, if you looked at a couple of cute kitten pics, browsed for a new pair of shoes or checked your credit card balance, then that's enough to prove you are human and not a bot! I did not know that.....bit sneaky if you ask me.

Thinking about it - does sound as tho it could be a wind-up - wouldn't it be a somewhat iffy at best, legally speaking?

It's more complicated than that. It uses the track of the mouse to the target box to determine if it's human-like movement. Furthermore if you are using something like Selenium with Python to automate things then it won't actually click the button using a mouse movement, it will grab the style element and then trigger the event. It can then tell no mouse movements were used. It looks as though it can use your browsing history as well though: https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/575112/why-are-bots-unable-check-i-am-not-ro SB [Post edited 7 Jul 2020 8:47]

What about if you use a trackpad, can it analyse those movements too?

It's the same thing? Whatever the input device the end result of the mouse moving coordinates on the screen is the same. SB

I certainly didn't go on that link so that's a bit weird! Ah, I see what happens, if you scroll to the bottom of the article it changes the URL to the next article in the news "stream". How embarrassing! SB [Post edited 7 Jul 2020 8:50]
