A salary cap is all well and good but there should be sustainable drops between the tiers - 18m to 2.5m is ridiculous. Unfortunately it’s the top two tiers which probably need to see a drop and that’s never going to happen.

Karl Robinson is right when he says it will just create a Premier League 2; the Championship will just become a closed shop - even more so than the Premier League itself as those relegated from there get parachute payments.

I don't quite see the problem for a club going up from L1 to the Champ. Surely their salary cap would automatically increase to the higher figure, so they can reward their best players to keep them, plus having leeway to hire in new talent?

Also, given Town have been working towards a more frugal model for some years now, I doubt we're half as fooked as many others.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

The issue is with the relegated clubs - either they’d have to go on a selling spree and possibly cut down the fees on players to ensure they meet the limit or they’d have a massive advantage on the rest of the division if they’re given some leeway to get the amount down.

That wasn't how the article phrased it.

Yes, it would be brutal for clubs getting relegated (gives even more of an incentive not to be, especially if player wage levels are on the line), but it would also make it fairer for those in lower divisions who are genuinely competing to go up. Also it would inhibit owners doing a "Bournemouth", buying a cheap L1 club and pumping them up to the Prem with money.

The irony is that Evans has wanted this sort for thing for years while we were in the championship. Even at the 18m there that was well above what we were paying (12m). 2.5M does seem low in comparison but it must be based on what clubs are currently paying to an extent. If it was say 4m would that mean only a couple of clubs were affected making meaningless. I don't know of course. As U21 not included maybe we starting paying them more. Maybe we spend more on sports science, scouts and analysis as they aren't included either.
Other clubs knew this this was going to pass hence why they have been buying players, before the cut off. Also means Jackson definitely won't be signing a new deal. If as Phil says he is much lower than Norwood can assume he is on less 5k a week.

That’s Evans all over, isn’t it? Wrong decision at the wrong time. Chose to bang the drum for FFP when we were challenging for promotion, now finds himself and our club acting as a poodle to the likes of Accrington Stanley.

He really is a stupid c–t and when fans are let back in to grounds, he should be reminded what a c–t he is until the day comes that he sells up and gets out of our club.

Vote does appear on a knife edge with a two-thirds majority required. From what I've read Portsmouth, Sunderland, Ipswich, Hull, Charlton, Wigan, Doncaster, Oxford seem set to vote against so would only take one more for it to be defeated. Not all other clubs have indicated how they might vote.

[Edit]Had a look at Gillingham chairman Paul Scally's comments and he looks set to vote for the cap[/edit]

I assume though if it goes through and we get promoted this season (don't laugh) we just never look back as a plan of action.

It's probably going to lead to a handful of yo-yo clubs regularly moving between the Championship and League One - which there already are to some extent - as relegated sides will have resources so far beyond everyone else, assuming some sort of transition period, which seems inevitable.

The gap between the Championship and League One will become even greater than the one between the Championship and the Premier League, which is saying something.

Recreating parachute payments in a different way.

That's worked out really well for the Championship.

Also, just as a note for when this inevitably goes through, f*ck Hurst and f*ck Lambert.

To be honest I think that's already the case to some extent. If not for Wigan getting docked points, 2 of the promoted sides would have got relegated back to League 1 straight away and Luton only escaped through a fairly heroic run of form at the end of the season. Rotherham have bounced straight back up (again) and from what I've seen this season a half competent manager would have had us promoted as well. A. Couple of seasons ago all three sides that got relegated from the Championship bounced straight back up at the first attempt. The quality at this level is already a big step below the Championship. This is just going to further cement it.

Huge decision this, we haven’t taken action by signing players before before the cap comes in, so will be hit hardest.

This will mean that we soon have as much chance of getting to the championship as Accrington.
HOw many fans are we going to lose when this becomes the norm?

Add to that , more young fans won’t be wanting to come either.

The value of the club should ME want to sell will also reduce.

Big big decision that is going to condemn league 1 teams to this level and kill sides dreams.

It's the relegation aspect that hasn't been given enough consideration. If there's a parachute-type system, then it will certainly generate a closed shop. If not, then it will give everyone a fair economic platform, but the impact on teams being relegated from the Championship will be huge. It'll kill them - they'll have to shed players off the books and everyone knows that so will be able to pick off relegated team's best talent for nothing and relegated teams will have to reinvent themselves. it's a recipe for back to back relegations.

If they are going down this route, it definitely need a cross-league approach with smaller gaps between the leagues.

I think I agree with O'Neil when he says a functioning (and enforced) FFP model would be a better option.

Is there not a chance that in the medium term it might benefit us? Levels of spending in the Championship had clearly gone well beyond our ability to generate revenue and the owner's willingness to invest. If we could get back up there within the next couple of years, we'd be in a better position to compete.

It will destroy football. I don't see how a club can go from spending £2.5m on salary get promoted and then have any chance of competing with clubs who had an £18m salary the year before. Which players would join a club in that situation knowing if the club is relegated their salary will be decreased dramatically again. You'll end up with the 3 going up will come straight back down

I also don't get the under21 rule, does that mean a club in L1 can give a salary to an U21 as high as they want? So dodgy owner comes in recruits lots of top quality U21 players they want pay them £20-30k a week and basically overspend and there aren't any ramifications or will FFP still exist?

From a purely free-market capitalistic viewpoint this is simply creating a monopoly on the top 2 leagues by the ultra rich clubs who are making their own legislation to stop other clubs competing with them. All of it's dressed up as financial responsibility and fair play but you can see that there are two sets of rules, one for Manchester City and one for Wigan. They also hoover up all the talent and loan it out amongst themselves. This is all very wrong.

Can you imagine what would have happened to Manchester City, QPR, Southampton, Leicester, Norwich, Leeds,Sheffield United and so on had they been forced to comply with all these rules in the third tier? Manchester City spent comparative millions back in the day to go straight back up and bounced up another league as a result and thats what helped secure their future. The rules are now actively preventing owners at this level from investing in their teams, regardless of income or fanbase to get back into the top two tiers. Bigger clubs with bigger incomes and fan bases should be able to have an advantage, our owners should be able to invest what they want into the clubs they own. The big clubs trade off of millions of pounds worth of debt, as does the business world.

This is a door being shut on the 3rd and 4th tiers of English football and there isn't a shred of outrage about it. We've ended up on the wrong side of the fence and if we're not back up by the time that door is bolted we may be dead. What a dire time to be a Town fan.

Won't make much difference to us this season as all already contracted senior players count as earning £1,300 a week, an average League One wage. Unlike a lot of clubs who let go loads of players at the end of last season, we're not looking for loads of signings.

The issue for us would be in later seasons once those contracts have lapsed and we are then adding to the squad.

So basically it’s this year or bust - if passed it will put a lot more pressure on Lambert and Evans to get back up.

Not sure it's possible to say that for definite because other clubs already in this division are likely to be in a similar position and it's impossible to say at this stage what sort of state clubs coming down next year might be in given the current financial climate. But looking long-term, this season is probably as good a chance as we'll have. Assuming it's passed, of course, and it appears it's going to be a very close vote.
