Anyone else get the feeling Downes has thrown his toys out of the pram? on 13:20 - Sep 15 by J2BLUE | Young guy on the verge of accomplishing a dream of being signed by a Premier League team with an agent in his ear telling him god knows what. Who knows what his agent has told him. Money drying up due to covid, you might get injured, this is your big opportunity, Euros next summer and you never know etc etc. He hasn't handled it well but i'm more interested in how he reacts when the window closes. Mings was pissed off and wanted to go but soon got over it and gave 100%. Also, i'm not sure I entirely trust Lambert and Taylor. I think we need to hear both sides when this is resolved one way or another. |
And look where MIngs is now - the fact he got on with the job and did it well before getting his breakthrough is the sort of thing top managers look at..

Anyone else get the feeling Downes has thrown his toys out of the pram? on 11:39 - Sep 16 by itfcjoe | "You'd have to ask Flynn if he wants to play" Which the club won't allow to happen - so the club controls the narrative. And Lambert claims to 'not know' whether he wanted to play on Sunday. They are bare faced liars, it is part of being a football manager to do so to the press at times - and that isn't a criticism. |
It depends though, doesn't it? Yes they might lie about a player's injury status, or a formation etc. (to throw an up-coming opponent), but for something like this they don't need to make any comment at all. Equally I don't see any benefit in pissing off your best player just for the fun of it. Lambert could just as easily say "I don't think he's ready yet" and leave it at that. Everyone would be fine with that, and the player wouldn't be pissed off. All these little comments are either Lambert/Taylor lying (and in the process upsetting their best and most valuable player) ...or they're actually just speaking the truth. I know which is most logical.

Anyone else get the feeling Downes has thrown his toys out of the pram? on 11:28 - Sep 16 by BrixtonBlue | You seem to be bringing your agenda with you. If it was anyone other than Lambert you'd be saying it looks like the player doesn't want to play. |
I'm not sure what's meant by "bringing your agenda" here. I don't think Lambert (and his team) are particularly trustworthy and therefore don't trust that their media statements are always in good faith. That's a perfectly normal way of navigating what's going on in the world, isn't it? As it happens I think their statements on Downes would strike me as evasive and obfuscatory, even if they came from a manager I liked.

I mean, you've literally just admitted your agenda right there. You don't like Lambert, which is why you're putting the blame on him for all this. Have a read of what I posted to Joe. It just doesn't make any sense why they would piss off their best and most valuable player for no reason. If you step back and look at it logically, from everything we know it looks increasingly like the player not wanting to play. I love Flynn as a player and I really want to be wrong on this... but come on, be honest, it really does look like it's him (and his agent) who are at fault. Bear in mind as well, if this really is Lambert and Taylor telling porkies, they'll be pissing off Flynn's teammates too. What on earth would be the benefit of that?

They've not remotely cared about pissing people off in the recent past. His team mates already think the manager is a joke anyway.

In what sense is me not liking Lambert "an agenda"? It's just a regular, good-old-fashioned ordinary "opinion", isn't it? Lambert has form for getting angry with people and banishing them. It doesn't have to be any more complicated than that.

Yes, but that opinion is clouding your judgement. Who has Lambert 'banished"?! Whatever you think of Lambert as a manager, he's not an idiot. And to "banish" your best player for simply handing in a transfer request would be idiocy beyond belief. Lambert knows he's on borrowed time and has to get us winning as quickly as possible or he's out of a job. So what does he do? He banishes our best player! Nope, sorry fella, it doesn't make sense.

Has he? Not seen that myself. Got a link? If that is the case here, why wouldn't Lambert and Taylor just say "His head's not in the right place at the moment" and leave it at that? Why would they make all these little digs and allude to poor advice from his agent? Whatever you think of them as a management team, they're not complete assholes!

I only know from Col U fans about their one, but no - they were seen as key players and not disrupters but he just wanted rid of them so they were banished. No real comment to press about it, as doesn't like speaking to the press about anything.

Your position is that Downes has definitely refused to play, based on your interpretation of remarks that (a) don't definitively say that and (b) are only one side of the story, in any case. My position is that I'm reserving judgement on whether Downes has refused to play, certainly until someone is prepared to actually state on the record that he has.
