A Crisis of Conservatism 14:00 - Sep 17 with 7320 views | tractordownsouth | I've written another piece on my blog about how Johnson has moved the Tories away from traditional conservatism and completely reinvented the party. I'm still not sure whether this approach can survive the likely economic impact of Brexit, or whether it's a house of cards ready to topple down. https://www.thingscanonlygetbetter.online/post/a-crisis-of-conservatism

A Crisis of Conservatism on 16:25 - Sep 17 by ROKERITE | Any minor damage to The UK economy will be trifling compared to the devastation caused by Covid-19 and the response to it. But even the damage done by Covid-19 and the response to it will be dwarfed by the destruction carrying on with the green revolution will cause. |
Good to see, yet again, you are not disputing some basic things. Brexit will damage the UK economy. What green revolution?

Well this is awkward. It is useful, even with an analogy, to base them on some form of fact or reality. There was never a time when “received wisdom” was that the World was flat. It was a myth invented in the 1900’s. “ No one before the 1830s believed that medieval people thought that the Earth was flat.” Said one historian. I somewhat think when Columbus was making his plans, you are the type that would actually be concerned about falling of the edge of the world, whilst the knowledgeable people in the room were working out how big the earth was, and how much supplies would be needed. Any ancient reference to the earth being flat, was the exception not the rule. [Post edited 17 Sep 2020 17:13]

A Crisis of Conservatism on 17:40 - Sep 17 with 1186 views | Trequartista | It was David Cameron that moved the Tories away from traditional conservatism, to which they have not returned. If you are giving Tobias Ellwood as an example of traditional conservatism, he is an ally of Cameron and May, and supported Rory Stewart at the leadership election. So i think by traditional conservatism, i think you mean the liberal wing of the Conservative Party that dominated it whilst Cameron and May were the leaders.

A Crisis of Conservatism on 16:45 - Sep 17 by ROKERITE | I simply haven't swallowed the myth the green blob have been pushing. Their Emperor has no clothes. Thirty years from now when your children and grandchildren are living miserable existences because politicians, eagerly egged on by their populaces, invested in things that sounded nice instead of things that worked you will realise how misguided you were. |
So you think human existence is actually threatened by an emphasis on clean, energy-efficient and resource-saving technology and behaviour? That doesn’t add up given we live in a finite world that can’t handle our current technology and behaviour.

Arguably, "Traditional Conservatism" expired during the 1980s. At least the postwar consensus, social responsibility, social conscience variety did. After that it became an individualist aquisition-fest, more aligned with the US understanding of the term.

Sounds like you're focussing on the activists. I've worked on climate science issues as a researcher, consultant and lately more indirectly in management roles since the early 90s. Worked with politicians, NGOs, communities, companies, investigative journalists, been a scientist/worked with scientists. Working with lots of intelligent people, none of whom are getting filthily rich working on something they feel passionate about, and not one of whom doubt that our activities are damaging. All this abhorring freedom and politicising it is just crap. It's sock puppet talk borrowed from loons and/or people with vested intersets who are spending shed loads of money to discredit something that threatens their investment or income.

In terms of the selfishness of society, which is at the crux of many of our problems today, Maggie's got a lot to answer for.

We've been feeling the effects in the NHS for four years now. Pretty much every single kind of qualified professional discipline has seen recruiting from the EU drop to nearly nowt. We've compensated partly by looking elsewhere but it is generally more beaurocratic, costly and time-consuming to do. And those appointed tend to need far, far longer to settle in than EU employees. Plus, the old spectre of 'third world recruitment' is rearing its head again. We're seeing more staff being poached from countries that are already desperately short of healthcare professionals. So you know, global Britain is really doing our 'global partners' a great service there.

Ditto in Higher Education. They’re just showing their opinions aren’t informed by experience. It’s depressing as feck that people have become so fixated on things that don’t directly affect them, yet are harming others, but what can you do?

Fair point. I didn’t venture into the social conservatism aspect as the party is quite divided on the issue and has been for a while. But the topics I’ve focussed on (economic conservatism, rule of law, institutionalism) have been present throughout almost all factions of the party until now.
