Brenner again sounded disappointed when Sunderland didn’t go 3-1 up... (n/t) on 11:59 - Nov 4 by clive_baker

I don't understand the stick he gets and I think it's more than a little unfair that he's called out on here.

He does a decent job, and always favours town which you would expect a local radio commentator to do, while retaining a healthy degree of balance. All of his language is in favour of us. 'Thank goodness that went wide' or the point Dolly made above about not tempting fate. I don't think he sounds disappointed when we score or when the opposition misses, quite the opposite. He's always fairly downbeat when we concede. I think that chance yesterday he was just surprised he missed as much as anything, as we all were.

I wasn't giving him stick, and I must admit, at the time of hearing it last night live, it did sound like a disappointment. However, having just watched that bit back on the replay, I can hear that what you say below is fair comment - it is his tone, which in the moment sounded more disappointed than it sounds on playback.

Whether this link will work, I don't know, but it was at 1:49:15 on the timeline

https://www.itfc.co.uk/matches/fixtures/first-team/202021/november/sunderland-vs

I actually happen to like his commentary, but at moments like that, as also mentioned above, can be heard slightly differently and I think it is all about his tone.

Apologies for causing a thread about it and for any unfairness to Brenner on this one.

I know, and I know you're the least likely person to be unfair, you're a good egg. I just think it's a trend on here that keeps coming up and its a bit harsh.

I also get the impression he might read this site to get a gauge of fans sentiment and it can't be nice to see his work criticised. The way I see it is he seems like a decent bloke, doing an honest job, and now more than ever I think we need to cut each other some slack. You can get to feck if you think I'll spend my time away from my family travelling up to Sunderland to commentate on this shower, so I'm glad he's up for it. God knows what time he would've got home last night. Also I have to say, relative to some of the regional reporters and commentators working for the BBC over the country he's got to be up there among the better ones, there's some absolute t0ss we could have.

Can we just leave it that he is a Marmite commentator, some people seem to love the spin he puts on games but for others of us it is like rusty nails on a blackboard and we would rather have another option, or a rest from him some weeks to let someone else give us something to compare and contrast.

Hey, i didn't bring him up!

You're welcome to choose the local radio commentators of the opposition, of course. I think you'll realise how good Brenner is then!

i think it's a really tough job actually. I know I'd be rubbish at identifying opposition players (particularly in stripy shirts).

Brenner provides excellent, live play-by-play, commentary. He is knowledgeable, professional, fair, and works well with colour commentators du jour.

Well done on admitting this Hops. I hope the other regular Brenner-knockers see the error of their ways and realise it's them with the problem not the commentator!

I do like Brennar, and think he gets unfair stick - but this season when you watch every game you realise just how often he gets our players wrong on the ball - happens 7 or 8 times a game!

I still think he is one of the better commentators and that he does well, especially getting bits out of often unreceptive co-commentators

Watching that Colchester pre-season friendly on the stream was enough to make me eternally grateful for Brenner.

Not sure why that's got downvotes. Sunderland are the last club whose goals Brenner would be cheering.

"...the other regular Brenner-knockers"

Hmmm... I'm not sure as I would class myself as one of those, certainly not a regular one - this was a one-off comment/observation.

Yeah fair point, I worded that badly. I just meant people are regularly popping up on here (especially after we've lost) complaining that Brenner favours the opposition - and was hoping they'd reflect on what you've posted (before and after).

Bizarrely, what I'd posted initially is no longer there - but I didn't edit it (or at least hadn't knowingly!) so it's only the comments afterwards that remain.

So yesterday I got my wish and we could listen to another BBC commentator. I think that no one could argue that, despite calling Portman Road Fratton Park and calling McGuinness McGoldrick, Martin Fisher was a vast improvement on Brenner Woolley. Calm and measured, brought out the best in Matt Holland (who was impartiality personified), would have been a joy to listen to were it not for the refereeing decisions (which were also well exposed by the BBC coverage).

Yeah but he's a mainstream TV commentator, not a local radio one.

You say calm and measured, I thought he was a bit boring TBH. Brenner's fine for his level, and if you compare him like for like (with other local radio commentators) he's very good.

Fisher also took FOREVER to tell us if Norwood had been sent off or not.

He does get his tone wrong in those situations quite a lot.

It must be difficult to get the balance right to express how clear a chance it is and therefore how bad a miss it was. He was not a Town fan before starting this job but he must want Town to do well. He can't prefer commentating on what we have now to the Championship and better.

On your last point, that was because Norwood took forever to walk from one side of the pitch to the other.

I may have heard Fisher commentate before but the name didn't ring a bell, I don't think he is in the top echelon at the Beeb. Mind you, some who are are ridiculously excitable and, if anything, worse than Woolley. Calmness was another good thing about the Three Counties commentators at Milton Keynes, sort of bargain basement Test Match Special comes to League One.

TV commentary is very different to radio commentary though - on TV the picture does a lot of the talking, whereas Brennar has to describe everything
