That's going to leave some very large empty buildings. That one on the Cornhill for a start off is going to be like an open sore.

There would be a really nice opportunity to make a lovely entrance way to the Cornhill if you knocked that down, did away with the bingo hall too, and built more attractive and appropriate units along a pedestrianised Lloyd's Avenue.

Spruce for Mayor.

Well now that Footers is world famous with a history of fundraising we can put him in charge of financing this scam... er I mean... scheme. First things first, we are going to need some pork for our union boys.

Which other successful retail shops are out there that require massive retail space over three floors? The one in Ipswich is going to sit empty for years. May as well knock it down and out something more appropriate there.

John Lewis is about the only one I can think of. Can't see them coming to scummy Swansea though.

I hate to go all jumpers for goalposts, but it's another part of my going down the town when growing up that's now gone.

and then legging it out the door.

Getting completely lost in the Carr Street Co-op which seemed to go on for miles.

Wondering why there was two branches of Boots about 200 yards apart, and then traipsing up that lane from the back of the current one to get to Tower Ramparts pre-shopping centre.

And then, Woolworths. Seemed massive, escalator downstairs to get to the toy department. Nipping out the side door by the delivery bay on Cox Lane.

It had a magnificent Deco entrance on Lloyds Avenue when it was Footmans, smell of coffee as you entered. Think it was demolished in 78’, cranes visible during Cup celebrations. As you say, a Saturday in Town was an event as a kid/teen. Shops, cafes, pubs. Even as a young’un I remember clean teas with Mum and Aunties in Corders. Saw Alf Ramsey in Woolies, but was probably more interested in looking at the big fish behind the counter, now found in Viking Aquatics!

Interesting trivia point re Lloyds Avenue bingo Hall mentioned above. Those of us over 40 will remember it as the Odeon, and I think it's actually listed.

If you look round the back of that building, next to the back door of Debenhams, you'll see it's all grey, apart from a solitary white brick about two thirds up.

Apparently that marks the spot that some unfortunate brickie tumbled to their death during construction circa 1935.

I've heard that story before and have spotted the brick in question.

OK, we can keep the building but all the bingo signage must go.

The basketball court and football goal in JJB.

Drew people from miles around. Was genuinely awesome going there when I was a youngun.

I totally agree.

Lloyds Avenue is wack - some fairly pleasant buildings on the east side, all starved of sunlight by the crap Debenhams building and the bingo hall.

Massive blow for Ipswich town centre, not unsurprising but going to leave a big hole there in the likely event that they can't find another department store to go in there

The battle between Ipswich Borough Council and Suffolk County Council has done nothing but kill the town centre whilst everything is now on the outskirts. Sad.

How is that about IBC vs SCC?

More about East Suffolk Council supporting retain parks in places like Martlesham.

Whoever it is, it seems that IBC are just totally stitched up by those around it - whether it be SCC, East Suffolk or whoever - there needs to be an overarching County Plan.

It happens in Planning - Everywhere is happy to build on the boundaries of Ipswich (Babergh or Suffolk Coastal) because it is council tax but the main service burden still falls onto Ipswich.

Agree completely on the second point.

The more rural authorities get their development done without upsetting their constituents.

Agreed. The thought process seems to be as follows:

Hmm what's this? A new housing development on the outskirts of Ipswich? No schools, shops or community facilities you say? Oh well, Ipswich proper can cover that!

I've always thought that when Pinewood and Thorington Park were developed they should have had their own schools. IBC residents sure do seem to fund a lot of facilities for out of town residents and seem to receive very little in the way of finding or thanks in return.

The way towns are growing now, the traditional high-street is probably on the way out. I can't pretend that I don't prefer to convenience of shopping areas like Ravenswood on the outskirts of towns. Getting stuck in town centre traffic has got to be one of the most unnecessary and hated consequences of high street shopping.

and town center car parks charge some ridiculous amounts of money... £3 an hour in bloody Colchester when I went there recently

Was only about thirty years ago of course that there was a couple of plans for a pair of large shopping malls in the town as well.

Crowngates was mooted when they knocked the William Pretty factory down and would have occupied the Tower Ramparts/Lloyds Avenue/Westgate Street/High Street site, incorporating M & S and Debenhams, and having a massive entrance where Providence Street is now.

And then there was the Mint Quarter. Which would have been on the Tacket Street and Cox Lane car parks, presumably razing Woolworths to the ground (and let's face it, that building is one hell of an eyesore these days), but I think fell flat on it's face at the planning stage.

I can't see any hope for anything in the town like that now. You could probably get away with something half the size of Bluewater near the bypass somewhere, but not in the town any more.

I'm not so sure. People don't go to Debenhams to socialise and people don't always want a load of other people in their house.

Or maybe that's just me!
