More alarming news... 12:50 - Jan 22 with 7265 views | DebsyAngel | Been reading up on the Covid vaccines - and was pleased the other day that my doctors are doing it.... well that is what I thought. They are contacting patients, but sending to just 5 places in Suffolk - Trinity Park is the only one in Ipswich and that is miles from me and I do not drive. And why is it the Pfizer vaccine only? Where is this Oxford one? Where are chemists and other centres that are meant to be opening? I know it's early days but my Dad has his at his surgery and the Oxford one, due to be done on Tuesday. I just feel there is no way out of this hell. The dangled carrot moved another 6 months into the future, like it always seems to be, I cannot live like this forever. The longer it goes on, the more I will never get over the anxiety.

More alarming news... on 12:58 - Jan 22 by DebsyAngel | Not been in a taxi since March 2019. I cannot understand why my 79 year old father is having the Oxford one, and not the Pfizer one. IF there were central venues a lot closer, I would not have a problem with going to one of those. |
Please remember, there has to be clinical staff on hand to help should anyone have an adverse reaction. It is very very rare, but there will be some that need assistance and that can only be done by a trained clinician. Most NHS staff with clinic experience are currently being redeployed to the wards so they are desperately looking for volunteers who have clinical experience to help where possible. They can't open up more vaccination hubs without them.

Oh yes, I agree and I wasn’t trying to imply anything - poor messaging on my part. If I was given a choice I’d choose the same as Ryorry for the same reason!

We are all different. As an over-70 with serious underlying health conditions, the offical info on the effectiveness of only one Pfizer jab is so low that having that jab would be completely pointless for me - there's no way I would risk stopping shielding & start going out again with only 32% protection for 3 weeks from a vaccine. I believe that % rises if you leave out the 10 days just after the jab to allow it to take effect, but that means I'd only have 11 days of 'freedom', the timespan that medics are sure one dose lasts for. Or make a daily 'things to be grateful for' list. The negative here is you might have to take a taxi or two buses, which i know will be hard with your anxiety issues. But then the positive is that through the brilliance of science, vaccines now exist which will ultimately be the answer out of this awful situation we're all in. Sorry if I sound harsh, I genuinely feel for you and want the best for you. I know all about anxiety so I'm not coming at this from a place of ignorance.

I am probably wrong because I’ve not read up fully on it but my understanding is that the info showing the % effectiveness was based on data that included people that had just been vaccinated. All vaccines take time to provide any protection. However, I would hope that if with one shot the protection is only 32%, this is being looked at because that would make it a panacea, not a vaccine, in real terms. I was surprised at the press conference yesterday that clarity on this wasn’t sought and hope it is over the next few days. If lack of a second vaccine is that catastrophic on protection, you would hope that Pfizer supplies would be dedicated primarily to second dose and the AstraZ one to us poor people down the pecking order. I think what I am trying to say is that I’ve no doubt the clever people are looking at this and hope if it’s as this article suggests, change what they are doing. Edit - seen your response btwðŸ‘ðŸ». I think that so much is being learned so fast but what is comforting for me is the post further up where they are clearly asking people questions before vaccinating. I remember long ago school days (I’m 60 now) where you were lined up like cattle and stabbed in much the same way! [Post edited 22 Jan 2021 15:10]

"my understanding is that the info showing the % effectiveness was based on data that included people that had just been vaccinated" I did cover that point in my post, but as I said, that would then only allow me an 11 day period of "freedom" that the scientists are sure 1 Pfizer dose lasts for. There's a book by Rob Kelly called Thrive which might help. He has developed a process to go through when you have negative thoughts to switch your thinking. If you're thinking that sounds like hard work...well, you're right. But it does seem to have an impact if you stick with it. Chimp Paradox is another good book. I appreciate you have probably tried all sorts of things like that.

I don't expect it'll do much for you, but I'll tell you that taxis have operated normally here for a long while now and there seems to be no large issue with the people who use them contracting the virus. I've used them multiple times myself to get to and from the office. I believe Taxi drivers haven't seemed to be a group of people suffering with the virus more than any other group either. Use a firm you're comfortable with, wear a mask, check that your driver is also wearing a mask, open both of the back windows to increase airflow. Airflow is really the key here. Sanitise your hands once you're in, seat belt on, windows open. Don't touch anything. When you're at your destination, find a bathroom, wash your hands, change your mask if you're particularly concerned. Do it all in reverse for your way home. I get that it's scary. My wife has an auto immune condition that means we have to be really careful too. I suppose what I'm saying is that for us, a taxi ride is well within our comfort levels of risk tolerance - especially if what waits at the end of it is a vaccine. [Post edited 22 Jan 2021 16:50]

He took her yesterday to the GP and had her 1st one, then today someone arrived at her house and gave her the 1st jab again. His Mother suffers from alzheimers so couldn't remember if someone had arrived today but all the literature left was the same as given to him yesterday. He"s worried if having it twice is dangerous, the nurse at the GPs didn't know, neither did the person on 111, Doc has phoned him back but also not sure although has confirmed she has had it twice, he is now waiting on the Doc phoning him back again after speaking to some central vaccine group.

I saw the press briefing today and their comments on the Israeli info. Interesting. With what they seem to be saying it clearly isn’t as simple as the media are trying to present or as pessimistic, but it’s something they are looking at as data emerges. They are also in contact with the Israeli people who are also looking at a range of information. I shall have a read of the transcript or what was said on iplayer. Your schedule looks cracking! Get in there! I’d settle for that but leave er indoors at the classical music concert while I went for a beer and curry with my mates. I’ve also got to fit in golf, more beer, a ski trip with more beer. Solution: skip sleep.

Sanitiser and/or disposable gloves. I hate the amount of plastic waste this disease has brought but if disposed of properly then it's a fair precaution under the circumstances. At least that way she can use the cab without touching anything Although the treatment of disposable masks here is mind-boggling in that some people seem to just throw them to the ground wherever. I can understand the concern of using public transport at the moment. I was supposed (again!), to be going in for surgery this month but it's been postponed. It's hardly urgent so I'm good with that. But the hospital suggested I took a cab in which surprised me to be honest. I'd have thought that would be the last thing they would want me to do. But I do think that was simply through lack of options. Said the same sensible advice though, about sitting in the back, mask wearing by both me and the driver, and of course airflow. I guess some basic precautions make all the difference. Would be better if everyone made the same effort.

Yes, it disgusts me the way masks are just thrown on the ground - I use disposable ones but they come off once I get indoors and straight into the black bin . I only use gloves when wiping stuff down, as when out I use TONS of hand gel. Be careful with that stuff though and make sure your hands are dry - I set my hand on FIRE Tues night - that was terrifying but thankfully no real harm done!

Do cut the elastic if/when you throw them. Report on the news earlier about animals getting themselves caught up and worse. Reusable are fine you know, just chuck them in the machine along with your other stuff. You could always soak them separately in the sink or bowl if not. That's all I do and I am pretty cautious. My sister puts hers into the washing machine with her work stuff, and even carrier bags on a short wash when she has enough of them build up. Just use sensible precautions without driving yourself mad. [Post edited 22 Jan 2021 20:54]

I used two last time I had to go somewhere. Cloth one underneath and disposable over the top. I also use a ton of hand gel. People ask why so much. I answer that it costs pennies and it's better to use it frequently and use too much than not enough.
