Yeah, nit-picking really I guess - don't know a great deal about him. |
He became one of the key figures in the American psyche during the 60s, a bit like J Edgar Hoover, as some shadowy presence that became bigger the more reclusive he became and with the limited but strange details of his life that emerged.
So, yeah, I don’t think it was gratuitous as there’s probably an entire older generation that associate Vegas with Hughes, even before the Mafia. |  |

Well done to you. Such a hard thing to do but an incredible relief and life seems a different place after. It is over 10 years for me which is incredible to think it had been that long. I wouldn't have made it through that year if I hadn't had the l intervention.

Excellent! A friend of mine many years ago was a gambling addict. It was so bad that in the end he was kind of gambling with himself on when the police would arrest him. He’d got into running bets for the kind of people you don’t want to know and stealing off his employers, all sorts of things. It destroyed his life really.
Not having an addictive personality it was impossible for me to really understand. He tried to explain what it was like and changed my views a long way away from ‘why don’t you stop’ ‘just give it up’ ‘get a grip’ etc.
In my view, gambling addicts, like alcoholics and others do need help and support and I do worry that advertising is allowed.

Advertising is a big part of it, as is its prevalence in sport. Took me a while to disassociate sports and gambling. |  |

People who want to be of help but don't understand the complex nature of the compulsions, how it all works or what to do.
Seriously well done for finding the strength to just "not do it anymore."

I am too a recovering gambling addict of nearly 2 and a half years now..It almost, almost took everything I own and love. Thankfully I have the most amazing wife..it wasn't just all about the money I lost which was into the £100,000's it was the lies the deceipt and the personality changes. I have been attending GA for 2 and half years now and have put blocks in place. I am.one of lucky ones as I have seen 1st hand what this illness can do. |  |

That’s absolutely brilliant, a huge achievement that fills me with hope, loved the article too. 192 days for me, and there’s barely a waking moment I don’t think about it.
There’s a lot to be sad about regarding our club at the moment, but one of my lowest moments was when the club went down the betting sponsorship route, like many clubs. I just felt absolutely bombarded by it all from every angle.
