I think we need the Cowleys on 20:15 - Jan 27 by Moriarty | Imho, we shouldn’t go for the Cowleys. Long ball at Lincoln and Huddersfield parted company with them because goals became hard to come by. We’ve been there, done that. Their video clips do nothing for me. My belief is if they come, “they’ll get us”, the reality will settle in and things will go stale. Their credentials are no better than Lambert when he arrived, or Hurst for that matter. Go Dyer. One of our own. Doing great with the under 23s and, genuine club man, and as Phil said in another thread, he’s bright, sharp and will do very well when he gets his own club. Phil has heard very good reports from players who have worked with him in the academy. A path to continuity and renewal. Supporters will back him to the hilt and everyone, including players, will see what the club means to him. Don’t underestimate that. Put faith in our own stock. Let’s back our own. A young bright manager with a future who’s doing great at our club and loves it? Dyer for me. All the way. [Post edited 27 Jan 2021 20:19]

I watched about 20 minutes of Paul Cooks Wigan side goal montage on YT the other night. Almost all the goals from breaks had 4 people in the box, plenty of goals from outside the box too. Simple things but they’re very absent from what we’ve had in the last few years. Plenty of debate on whether he’s a long ball merchant like the Cowleys or not. Cook’s more tried and tested than after or the Cowleys with more success to point to. I’d take the Cowleys but I’m sceptical and I’d only take them in the proviso Danny Cowley took some elocution lessons as his voice is bloody annoying but that’s just my snobbery.

I think we need the Cowleys on 08:53 - Jan 28 by Kieran_Knows | Unless I'm mistaken, I thought the Cowleys were sacked because they weren't prepared to work under the Sporting Director model that Huddersfield have in place there? Could've sworn I read they wanted to buy more British players, but Huddersfield wanted to go down the data/European route when signing new players with this Sporting Director? |
They were tucked up by Huddersfield. Got offered the job as Head Coach, turned it down as wanted to be manager, Hudds then went back to them a few days later and then offered them manager role. Then sacked because they wanted to go down the Head Coach route - so they effectively were just used to keep them up..... This podcast about them by the Huddersfield beat writers gives a real insight into things: https://play.acast.com/s/oohtobea/vnid%3A%2F%2Fepisodes%2F39851758%3Fmedia_id%3D

I think we need the Cowleys on 08:15 - Jan 28 by GeoffSentence | Lambert has played at a high level? who knew |
Was it one season at a top German club, and a few years at the second best Scottish club? It's not like he's played for several years at the level of Mick Mills, for example, or Terry Butcher, or arguably any Town player from the late seventies and early eighties. I think he tries to makes too much of one good year to be honest, quite apart from everything else. Narcissism isn't good for you. I don't have any bad wishes towards the bloke, I just wish he'd hurry off somewhere else.

That's the big question I have about him, he had one season at Dortmund, and yes they won the CL, but if he was so successful and had the ability to work in a pressure cooker environment, why did he only last one season? Also 1 goal from midfield in 44 games.

I think one of his children was ill and a move to Celtic was there so he wanted to come home - totally understandable. Also, even if he comes across as a nob as per posts above - no-one knows him outside of football, and it does feel that his whole football persona is that of this hard, nasty guy - whether that be with press, players, staff etc The whole thing is a front, must be draining to be like that all the time - it's certainly drained him as he looked broken and dead behind the eyes even before his bout of covid

Like a Brexit voter? You should apologise for that. I’m not even British. Your comparison is as odious as it is untrue. There’s nothing wrong with club loyalty. To compare my club loyalty to xenophobia is devoid of merit and common sense.

Wasn’t part of Cook’s success at Wigan based on clean sheets and a defence protected by 2 deep midfielders? I’m open to correction on that. I’m not saying Cook is a bad option, btw. I think assuming Lambert is out soon, it’s an opportunity to give Dyer a chance. Phil fancies he’ll do well at a club and players speak highly of his coaching, so for me, that’s the chance I’d take. It’s also a transition and a genuine Ipswich man at the helm I really don’t understand why there’s so little apparent support for that. As you’ll see above, one poster has compared me to a brexiteer (even though I’m not British) for expressing my support for Dyer! It’s extraordinary. The worst case scenario is that we go Cowley or Cook, things go stale because we stagnate league position wise (whether L1 or Championship) the lens turns on our style of play, the wonder of a new appointment wears off, people get fed up and Evans persists. Seen it before? And in the meantime, Dyer finds a club and thrives. Life’s a gamble. Go Dyer. Fortune favours the brave.

Just asking |
Perhaps they should have played for Dortmund.

Couldn't have summed things up better. Club badly needs a reset that all the fans can get behind and Dyer, for me, is the man.

I agree. The other advantage with Dyer is we can appoint him initially as caretaker manager, then after 10 games if we we're doing no better appoint a Cook or Cowley as permanent manager and Dyer goes back to the U23's to gain more experience. Obviously we all hope he succeeds and I think he has a good chance just because his passion and motivation for the club to do well should just spark enough enthusiasm into the players so they start playing at their actual level.

I think we need the Cowleys on 08:01 - Jan 28 by tractorboy1978 | I think you underestimate how poor Huddersfield were - they had 1 point from their first 8 games when the Cowleys went in off the back of a season getting pummelled in the Prem. They'd forgotten how to win and the Cowleys turned them around quickly. It probably wouldn't be champagne football but they are pragmatic and get the best out of the components they have. They are tactically astute and know how to organise and communicate what they want from the players. |
Happy to admit, am probably a bit biased as I have my mind set on Paul Cook. A very petty thing to add, Danny Cowley’s voice and accent does my head in. [Post edited 28 Jan 2021 12:13]

Its the "getting the best out of players" bit that I like about the Cowleys. they take average and make good. I watched a few Lincoln games in National League and L2 (only on telly, BT Sport) and I see a coach doing what is needed to get results, irrespective if its "long-ball to a lump " or tika-taka footy. Be my first choice and they were before Hurst joined.
