Given Thomas pass against Sunderland why is he not playing in the final 3rd?

Dozzell at #10 on 07:30 - Jan 28 with 1760 viewsthebooks

I think he could, but at the moment he’s the only player we have who will take the ball deep and try to get it forward rather than pass sideways.

How many assists does he have playing for Ipswich?

Zero!

We want him to be good, we are desperate for him to be good.

But, he’s a poor mans Judge

Offers nothing

He has improved this year and needs more patience from fans.

I think he is not playing in his best position

Sears has scored 3 goals in 3 years and yet people rave about his work rate !

Come on ! If we want to point fingers Dozzell is well down the peaking order

I don't think I've ever seen a more wrong post on here. Kudos, that's a pretty high bar you've cleared.

Don’t laugh, but I could see him doing a job as a right sided wing back, similar role to Alexander Arnold. Could deliver some lovely balls in from out there. Spread play too.

Just a thought.

Think he’s playing now where he’s played most often in his career and where he sees himself playing. Good little bit of analysis here, holding his own in the division tackles wise and high level of interceptions.
There’s definitely improvement needed but this is his fits full season back following a really bad injury. Really glad we got him signed up to a longer contract.

Not a Lambert invention - it's the position he played for all of England's junior teams.
I'm sure he'll end up there, but might be better to play him further forward for a few more years

Look back at his passes for judge against Swindon too

I'm amazed we havent given him a roaming 10 role. He is one of if not the best defence splitter passer we have in our squad.

I'd play him with a free role operating centrally and able to pick the ball up from deep or drift right up to the forwards as he sees fit, dragging the opposition around and disrupting their patterns as he does so. He could do this in a nominal 3-5-2, and we probably have two players to play the wing back roles at the moment, plus KVY to come back. Also has two up top:

There's not enough mobility in that back 3 to cover for having wing backs whose preference is to play really high up the pitch. I'm not sure Thomas has ever even played as a wing back and Edwards was pretty hit and miss playing there last season.

I wouldn't necessarily take any notice of trends, I just think that's the best fit for our best players. Also, if you are dominating games it's your chosen formation that should dictate to the opposition what they need to do, not the other way round. We should, in the third division, be the club that is dictating how our opponents have to adapt.

Woolfy is mobile enough, and McGuinness could be with improved game awareness, but I take your point. I think it also requires a mindset change, the team going out assuming that they are going to push back and dominate the opposition, then it becomes less of an issue. And we need that sort of attitude change, and may well be about to get the opportunity to try it, to get out of this rut of timid half-arsed negative crap.

Sides that make three at the back work tend to have really mobile players either side of a central defender, generally players that can play full back or who are even good enough to play in midfield. Woolf is good on the ball and reasonably mobile but not hugely so. His passing is good but he carries the ball out less often as he's not that quick. McGuiness really isn't mobile at all and he's not a natural left sided player either.

You need to have more footballing ability, pace, and mobility in the back three to make it work. That's why, one or two games aside, we were dreadful playing three at the back last season even though we had a more natural wing back available in Garbutt. When we used the system under Burley we had the likes of McGreal and Venus who could pass a ball, and in McGreal's case he was sharp enough over a few yards as well. We then had Hermann who was a proper athlete and could bomb forward from the LCB role. We more or less always had a left footer playing on that left side as well, and always someone who could play as either a LB or a CB. We simply don't have that now. It's just a different form of square pegs in round holes again. The irony is that for the size of the sqaud, the players we have don't naturally fit any formation. That's a huge failing from the management.

I'm hearin' what you're sayin', but I'm not completely convinced that a McGreal-Mowbray-Venus back three would have been much more mobile than a Woolfenden-Chambers-McGuiness one. Miles more talented yes, but not necessarily more effective given that one operated at the top of the second division, and the other would only need to handle the third division. But I think perhaps your footballing ability point would swing the balance actually.

Perhaps Nsiala in for McGuinness, or prefereably Ndaba if he were here would improve it? I just like the look of the rest of that setup so much, given what we have at the moment, and others who could come into it.
