Trump cleared (n/t) on 21:25 - Feb 13 by ElderGrizzly | More chance he is dead by 2024. The other challenge is there are at least 6 state cases ready to take him to court and Mitch can’t save him there. The view appears to be the GOP won’t back him and more likely is he will form his own party. Which this hints at |
He won't form his own party as that would lead to the Democrats winning easily in 2024 with the Republican/anti-establishment vote split. The way to power in countries where there is a two party system is to take over one of the them. Trump was always a Democrat voter but knew his route to become President was taking the Republican party by storm. I would say the chances of him getting the nomination if he runs next time are 99%. Can you imagine Trump back in the White House? Stranger things have happened, like him winning in 2016.

Harris is deeply unpopular amongst Democrat voters. Look at how badly she polled in 2020. Trump would be hot favourite. The Democrats need to find a Kennedy figure but they are so far removed from the party of the 1960s that there is little chance of such a personality coming to the fore. Trump cleared (n/t) on 21:38 - Feb 13 with 1830 views | Churchman | I think it very interesting and very sad. I’m a bit puzzled as to why the Democrats went for this, when their chances of convicting were zero. Can he not be prosecuted under their normal laws for incitement? The Republicans were scared for their own careers and they were voting on a procedure that is designed for a sitting President, not an ex one. Trump can still stand next time, though I doubt he will - one of his children might It strikes me that their constitution has a flaw, aside from allowing berks like Trump to stand in the first place. There seems to be no mechanism for dealing with a nut job. After Roosevelt died, the 2 term rule came in so somebody who’d gone barmy like FDR couldn’t do more than 8 years. I hope they bring something in so that such a disgrace of the most powerful man in the world can be held to account. Just thought as my knowledge of US stuff is rubbish. This one in the US is clearly going to run and run.

Trump cleared (n/t) on 21:28 - Feb 13 by The_Last_Baron | I'm not so sure. He still has a huge base of support, he may even have a proxy in place to run for it. I wouldn't bet against him, A Biden v Trump run-off (or more likely Harris v Trump) in 2024 is the most likely outcome as things stand. |
I think it'll be Paul Ryan - I've said on here before that I think his decision to resign in 2018 was done in order to distance himself from the inevitable carnage in preparation for a potential run. He's popular among the Tea Party types whilst also being respected within the Romney/Collins wing so he has the potential to put together a broad coalition. I don't think the MAGA crowd will be a massive constituency within the GOP primaries anyway - some will transfer their support to Cotton/Hawley, but because it's so cultlike, many won't even bother voting if Trump isn't on the ballot. I think it's possible that the next nominee can win the primaries without support from Trump.

Trump doesn't give a toss about the Republican Party, it was always just a vehicle for his ego.

You could be right. However 4 years is a long time and any number of things could happen. Someone relatively unheard of could emerge. Or another celebrity candidate. Who know, America is a mad house.

I could see someone like that going for it. Whatever happens the only chance of a Republican winning is to continue down the road which Trump started. 74 million votes proves this. A boring, establishment Republican candidate will not energise voters to any degree and will be doomed to a Mitt Romney / John McCain style defeat.

Trump cleared (n/t) on 22:24 - Feb 13 with 1705 views | The_Last_Baron | President Trump's statement in full after his acquittal: “I want to first thank my team of dedicated lawyers and others for their tireless work upholding justice and defending truth. “My deepest thanks as well to all of the United States Senators and Members of Congress who stood proudly for the Constitution we all revere and for the sacred legal principles at the heart of our country. “Our cherished Constitutional Republic was founded on the impartial rule of law, the indispensable safeguard for our liberties, our rights and our freedoms. “It is a sad commentary on our times that one political party in America is given a free pass to denigrate the rule of law, defame law enforcement, cheer mobs, excuse rioters, and transform justice into a tool of political vengeance, and persecute, blacklist, cancel and suppress all people and viewpoints with whom or which they disagree. I always have, and always will, be a champion for the unwavering rule of law, the heroes of law enforcement, and the right of Americans to peacefully and honorably debate the issues of the day without malice and without hate. “This has been yet another phase of the greatest witch hunt in the history of our Country. No president has ever gone through anything like it, and it continues because our opponents cannot forget the almost 75 million people, the highest number ever for a sitting president, who voted for us just a few short months ago. “I also want to convey my gratitude to the millions of decent, hardworking, law-abiding, God-and-Country loving citizens who have bravely supported these important principles in these very difficult and challenging times. “Our historic, patriotic and beautiful movement to Make America Great Again has only just begun. In the months ahead I have much to share with you, and I look forward to continuing our incredible journey together to achieve American greatness for all of our people. There has never been anything like it! “We have so much work ahead of us, and soon we will emerge with a vision for a bright, radiant, and limitless American future. “Together there is nothing we cannot accomplish. “We remain one People, one family, and one glorious nation under God, and it’s our responsibility to preserve this magnificent inheritance for our children and for generations of Americans to come. “May God bless all of you, and may God forever bless the United States of America.”
