But the fact is, he doesn’t. His glove work does still need improving and he’s not the finished article, but he’s certainly got lots of talent. He’s got the X factor about his game, that’s clear as day.

Cricket on 08:00 - Feb 14 by Chrisd | This isn’t about playing good test match cricket, whomever won the toss and batted first was going to win this test. |
Indeed, makes a farce of the whole thing. ICC need to do something about this, either give the toss to the away team to prevent it, or allow the umpires to call off a game if the pitch is deemed unsuitable (rather than just dangerous which they can at the moment)

Since 2016 in the English County Championship there has been no mandatory toss, with the away side having the choice if they wish to field first. If the away side declines to field first, the toss still takes place. Given that "home advantage" in Test cricket seems greater than ever, despite neutral umpires and DRS, this does seem worth trying in Test cricket, although it seems more aimed at stopping counties preparing "green tops" rather than spin friendly pitches & wouldn't have helped in this case. An alternative would be to give the visitors the choice of batting or fielding in each game, although some would argue that would give them too much advantage.

Such a rule would work against us in home conditions. Plenty of bowlers who could make hay against our batsmen at a grey Chester-le-Street but that is based on environmental factors outside of a team or groundsmen's control. I can actually recall us preparing an absolute bunsen at the Oval in 1998 against Sri Lanka. Murali took 16 wickets in the match. Ian Salisbury took 1-80 odd.

I still think the option of never letting the away side lose two tosses in a row is a good option. Eg 1st test normal toss if the home side wins the away team automatically has choice in the 2nd test. Means away team can effectively win all the tosses in a series but home team can't. We've done incredibly well to win 3 out of 4 games this winter only winning the toss once.

Think it would be good for the away side to choose on the first test, and then whoever is losing the series gets to choose on the second test. Only toss a coin if the series is level after the first test has finished. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Cricket on 09:48 - Feb 14 by woodbridge_blue | Move Pope up to open with one of Burns and Sibley. |
Madness. Pope like Bell before him is a middle order player. For once we have some top order batters and you want to drop them? Burns - needs a score and has done well over the last 2 years, this was always going to be a challenge coming in after missing SL and having no cricket since August. Sibley is finding his feet and needs a good run this year to see if he can be more consistent. Crawley - just starting and will come straight back in at 3. Also those saying Buttler should be dropped? The last 12 months have been his best in terms of keeping and batting in the Test arena. He is a leader in the group and nailed on to play, one of the first names on the team sheet. Foakes is good and deserves to be in but he cannot play instead of Buttler. He is just unlucky he is playing at a time when the spot he wants if occupied.

Although the 3rd umpire cannot review the decision about whether the batsman was actually playing a shot. That poor decision was down to the on field umpire.
