I dont like this.

Lose your card without realising and you could have a big chunk of cash gone very quickly.

Never be afraid to share your thoughts.

If you have a banking app then you get regular texts when money is withdrawn so if something looks suspicious simply block your card using said app. If not, then someone can pop into branch and put limits on how much money can be withdrawn per day.

One of my favourite things about Monzo (and I think other "startup" banks do similiar) is getting phone notifications whenever money is spent on my card, and I can just instantly cancel it through it as well.

Barclays App does that for every transaction however small I get a text. Even if I transfer money between my own accounts.

With £100 limits- there’s even less chance of me remembering my pin.

Yea my Curve card notifications saved me when Uber hackers got on my account. They only got two orders off before I removed the card.

Lesson learnt. Apple Pay only now for me.

I’m fine with it. I check the account online minimum daily and can access anywhere via the app. The banks are really good at picking up unusual transaction patterns now so I’m comfortable.

Cash is well in decline, but that was always going to happen. Covid has just accelerated it.

Still needed though.

Pay a kid to cut the grass, or walk the dogs, run an errand...

Cash has got to still have a big place for a long time yet surely?

Giving someone a lift to the airport, they're gonna chuck you the money for fuel.

I dunno, there must be hundreds of reasons if we could be bothered to consider them.

Pick you up a sandwich whilst I'm out? You've going to pay me in cash you'd think.

Yes to cash, cash in!

I don't know if you've used banking apps but transferring money is ridiculously simple. Once you have their details you can pay them for petrol or a sandwich in seconds.

I realise it may take time for the MySpace generation to catch up though

It's not the same though is it?

What kid wants to paid by an app?

He wants to buy smarties so he can put the multi-coloured caps in his bike's wheel spokes...

Ok, ok. Not the best example.

But what next? Tax the kid cos everyone will know he's been given a fiver?

Plus how safe is using the phone for all banking needs? Tech tends to get hacked so often all of this sounds contradictory to me.

I bank online of course and it's damn convenient, on my laptop, but that's the only place I do any sort of transactions.

We have a thing called Vipps here. Basically, as long as someone has a mobile phone, I can transfer money and they receive it in their account immediately. Up to 5000 NOK is free to transfer. Everyone has Vipps. We can also use it to pay for pretty much anything. Most businesses have a Vipps number to receive payments.

Don't get me wrong, I hope cash stays but I think you'd be surprised how many kids have debit cards. There's also an app called Go Henry or something similar purely designed for kids to have a debit card linked to their account.

I think charities would miss out most if cash was phased out.

Homeless people and drug dealers might struggle too.

Is there no desire to keep some things to oneself anymore though?!

What if you buy a bit of weed?

Get a mate to fix some guttering?

If we're not careful there'll be no room left for the slightest bit of mild rule-breaking or corruption left!

Oh I agree. Drug dealers are generally very crafty so I'm guessing they will have method of receiving payment.
