The absolute, actual state of this team... on 17:38 - Apr 5 by Nthsuffolkblue | We are at the point where some of these players should be busting a gut to persuade managers to take them on a contract next season. Even those in contract should be trying to persuade the manager they are worth a first team place beyond the summer. They seem incapable of it. |
This is a very good point. I don't think that the full effect of COVID on L1 and below has been felt yet. A lot of clubs at this level are going to be feeling the pinch, substantially, next year. None of this squad will attract interest from a higher level. If, as a player, you're out of contract this summer, surely it would be in your interest to show other employers why they should sign you? Bizarre.

They'll all know the writing is on the wall. They'll all be desperate to show something in these last few games. They just can't.

The absolute, actual state of this team... on 15:54 - Apr 5 by DanTheMan | I know what you mean but that seems to be part of our curse. Players who look rubbish here, then go elsewhere and they play much better. I was one of those people saying (pre-Cook) the squad isn't that bad, it just needs someone to make them play like an actual team but I was very wrong it seems. The rot has properly set in, so it is somewhat of a blessing that Cook can gut it this summer. |
If he stays. If the takeover falls through, well....

I would imagine most of the players are on the most money they will ever earn in their careers at the moment. Hard to motivate yourself if you’re in that state of mind unless you are elite level.

I see it the other way round, though. Presumably these players are accustomed to a way of life that a £3k per week wage (for arguments sake) gives. Are they that naive, that they haven't considered what happens when the money runs out? I suppose I'm answering my own question here.

The absolute, actual state of this team... on 17:04 - Apr 5 by patrickswell | Not at all. It’s based on 3 seasons in which these players have in various combinations played their parts in a spineless relegation (Wycombe exceeded our 18/19 points total today) and have screwed up 2 successive good starts to a season so that they can embrace 10th place in League One with greater fervour than they have embraced 1st to 6th place. It says a lot that the only period since November when the team thrived was when a coach was briefly calling the shots. As soon as a manager has retaken the reins, they’ve gone back to “just about enough”. Pick up the pay cheque and laugh in the fans’ faces. They’ll be out of there by the time fans are back in numbers, They’ve played us for suckers over 3 years now. And when they come back with their new clubs, they’ll deserve nothing but derision from us. [Post edited 5 Apr 2021 17:05]

Agree with a lot of this. I think the club ‘thriving’ with the coach calling the shots is slightly pushing it. 3 scraped wins 1 against 10 men is more a blip from the norm than thriving. The club has zero standards, from the state of the facilities to the players themselves. Over 40 in the squad. They don’t have to go the extra mile. Easy street. Somebody else’s fault. Loanees: fitness and stay out of trouble. Old timers: pick up the pay check, top up the pension. Lower league players: easy money. Prospects: they have no idea what high standards are. When some find another club, like McGoldrick, the injuries will be a thing of the past, expectations will be high and they will do a lot better. They won’t at Ipswich, the byword for fading mediocrity where relegation means lower costs and little else. While Evans is here, Cook is in danger of ruining his reputation. I don’t see what chance he has and in his shoes I’d be off like a shot if I didn’t get the backing I needed. As for the players, I really don’t care if they all go. They’ve done nothing to merit a contract for me. But in reality back on earth I’d keep the ones others have mentioned.

Haha! I dunno Fungers. I’d like to think it’s as straight forward as they aren’t very good but maybe there is indeed something else at play here?

I would imagine, with the way they are playing, those who can think this through are busy preparing for a career change.

The absolute, actual state of this team... on 15:56 - Apr 5 by The_Major | Spin forward to 2027... "And incredibly, that's the second consecutive Champions League victory for Northampton Town, with their midfield lynchpins of Edwards and Dozzell running the show for them as usual, and Kayden Jackson scoring his 57th goal of the season...." |
Oh come off it. Theres no way Edwards is playing first team football in 2027.

The absolute, actual state of this team... on 16:07 - Apr 5 by JDB23 | Ridiculous that you could make the argument that we are actually worse now than under Lambert. I believe Cook is the right man for us but my god what on earth is going on with these players. |
well because arguably we are, under Lambert the assumption was just the team werent playing properly because Lambert was a bad at his job, get someone in who could do the job and everything would be sorted. now the situation is either Cook is just as bad as Lambert was at getting the job done, or actually the problems were in the squad all along and Lambert was doing the best he could, which means Cook is doing the best he can, which means we are basically facing a rebuilding a team from scratch situation which means the club is actually in a worse place.

I find it difficult to believe he will be playing first team football much next season. If he is, he will need to find a much higher level of consistency than he has done here.
