Without wishing to defend Hurst in any way, wasn't it out of his hands as Waghorn made it clear he wanted to leave and Evans was keen to make a very good profit on him?

Waghorn saw Hurst for what he was.

Peterborough still ruing the day we gazumped them to Jackson, forcing them to sign Toney instead (for a million quid less).

I was reading yesterday that a few clubs are thinking of putting in a £35m offer for Toney. I'm sure Peterborough have got a nice little sell on fee for him.

we sold waghorn for 5m. jackson wasn't even a third of that and on much less wages; you can't call him a replacement!

How about selling Daryl Murphy and replacing him with Leon Best. Both deals sanctioned by.........Marcus Evans.

That is a bit of a myth. Best was going to be signed before Murphy left. The big failure was being unable to sign anyone to replace Murphy before the window shut.

Crazy thing is, some of these players could have had amazing potential if they were just a couple of them added to a solid team. Sadly for us, we had a whole new cast at the same time.

Think of some of the players we had that went on to do much worse or retired after they left us-
We had the likes of Anderson, Wordsworth, Tabb, Rowe, Drury, Bru etc etc - Who weren't world beaters - but they all had moments in a decent team where their ability was the best it ever has been. Had you got all of those names in the same team at the same time - it would have been an utter disaster.

Jackson. Nolan. Harrison, Nsiala. Edwards. Hurst. Donacien

Summer 2018 was their big break and none of them made anything positive out of it. From the moment they got here, they’ve all to varying degrees looked like they want to be physically sick while wearing our shirt. They were supposed to be the new faces designed to rip up the comfort culture, instead they laid the groundwork together with those who followed them for a culture of failure to go alongside mediocrity.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Town squad that has made it clearer in their performances and their actions that football is their job. Clock in, clock out run around a bit, fail to perform, fail to win, go home. They’ve deserved the empty stadiums because their efforts have only really been worthy of contempt for far too long. And they seem OK with that.

We’d just finished 12th for our 4th top half finish in 5 years in the 2nd tier.....this ‘comfort culture’ thing is rubbish, we had limited players giving there all.

Keiffer Moore for £20k in January was seen as a massively disappointing replacement - what we’d give for him now

Thing is though, if we'd have signed Toney he would probably as been as pony as Jackson has been for us the way we've played the last couple of years. This club is a striker's graveyard, Norwood before ITFC was 32, 23, 16, 21 in his last 4 seasons. If we had signed Jonson Clarke-Harris who we were linked with in the summer he'd have been lucky to get double figures here instead of the 30 odd he's banged in for Posh.

Until someone comes up with a better phrase to sum up the drop in intensity that settled across the club after 2014/15, “Comfort culture” will have to do. I think it’s a pretty spot on phrase given that we have testimony from David McGoldrick about the lack of pressure to go out and win every game, which must have been a great comfort to the fans who’d shelled out for tickets/travel etc to know that they were going to see a team who were laissez faire about how the day would be.

Hurst’s signings didn’t arrest that in the Championship and appear to have continued it in League One as well.

McGoldrick was talking about games mattering at the business end of the season and that they hadn’t here for a couple of seasons - that’s not wrong but it’s not evidence of a comfort culture. If you are mid table you are mid table, you can’t invent pressure and pretend you are still in the race for the title like Sheff U were.

He’s probably finding the same at Sheff U now

He wasn’t talking about the business end of seasons, he was admitting that the team had got into a mid-table mindset and couldn’t push beyond that. See also Berra’s “We’re Ipswich Town, we’re not world-beaters” quote. The whole subtext to “Be careful what you wish for” was “Shut up, sit down and eat your gruel.”

Hurst and the #NewEra was supposed to refresh all that, instead it only worsened things. I can take the fact that neither Hurst or his signings could cut it at Championship level, it’s the fact that they’ve looked so lethargic and uninspired at League One which is disappointing.

He was talking at the end of March saying about pressure to win games “at Sheffield United at the moment”.

I think there was a realism around the club that the way it was funded that competing in the 2nd tier was tough, players know what they are on and what other players are on - and that if they are on £5k a week and every one at Derby or Forest is on £25k a week then you will struggle.

It felt as though we would give it a go at the start of each season and then tail away and try and grind out enough points to make league position look accepatable.

As you say all of Hursts signings have proven to be poor - for all Lamberts faults, there was so much damage done to the club in that transfer window by Hurst (and Evans) that the club will only now be able to recover from now the owner has gone. Not one of those signings is going to sign a second contract, what a sorry state of affairs

The biggest one of the lot, you don't sell a guy who has scored 30 goals in the Championship for £3m without an incredible replacement, even then you don't, utter madness, that was the start for me..

The worst thing about it was he didn't do it for the interest of the Club, he did it for the player, he said he couldn't stand in his way, what rubbish, he'd have got over it no doubt..
