Sounds about right with that I heard - 5/6 players were told they were part of plans going forward - anyone else with time left on their contract is free to leave.
That being said, I’m not sure who those 5/6 were as I’d heard conflicting stories on 2/3 of them. |  |

Very surprised that the list apparently includes Wolfenden, And especially Downes and Dobra. To me they are the three bright sparks we have. I certainly don’t see many better than them on our books, so he saying that even the best we have aren’t good enough or don’t fit in with his way of doing things. Sorry to see them go, but maybe it’s the way it needs to be to get the traction and momentum as quickly as we want it. I’m sure those players, and others, will go on to have solid careers.
All I can think is that if the shake up works we are in for an infinitely better few seasons than the last few. But the disaster of Hursts clear out has burnt me so I confess to having a few nerves about such a huge revolution. |
Dobra it seems a little harsh on as barely featured, Downes doesn’t want to be here so get rid.
But the rest, Woolfenden including have been part of failure for 2 years in League 1. Even in Paul Cooks small tenure he has seen the inconsistency and unreliability of this squad, why would he want to keep anybody, the aren’t good enough, 11th and 9th in League 1 reflects that.
As I say, Dobra aside, can’t see the problem with this. | |

Double edged ploy?
You have a contract with us, but you are free to try and find a move elsewhere = you were so poor see if anyone will offer you anything, then come back for pre-season with a proper mental attitude.
Those in contract may well find the offers elsewhere to be lower, of course they could simply see out their contract stealing a living, or may, just may, think if I don't up my game I may have to find a job outside of football at the end of my contract. |
That’s a very high risk, negative kind of motivational policy. Too high risk and wouldn’t be great man management for me.
I just hope he gets this right or the he’s going to cop a LOT of criticism very quickly. Flip side of course is that if he gets it right he’ll be an untouchable hero for a few years. |  |

I don't disagree with your point but i think Downes is a shock to me as he's a 100% player in attitude and certainly good enough to get in every team in this league and the majority of championship teams.
I would also keep Teddy, the rest of them are certainly replaceable.
I'm yet to be impressed by Dobra despite the fanfare. |
Agree that there are some real surprises in there .
Downes in particular , but if he has said he wants to leave , then it makes sense , no point having him if he is not committed .

I’m really not worried about who we get rid of. Downes, Dozzell, Dobra, and Bishop I’d be happy to stay but even if they left I’m not getting my knickers in a twist.
Overall I’m always a glass half full type person and Cook must know what he’s seen in training/games is not as good as he’s seen before and therefore it has to change, he’s an experienced manager and seems keen to listen and engage with a younger coaching team for opinions. He will have had the ear of Dyer I’m sure.
Will we see a couple of the lads from the U18s make an impact in pre season and be in with a shout?
Will Cook really have that much of a budget to assemble pretty much a whole new squad?

I expected this but cripes..... I'd keep Dobra, I'd keep Woolf, I'd keep Downes unless he was clear he didn't want to be here anymore which I can well believe.
I think almost everyone else I'd have no issue with seeing them go..... this could get very interesting indeed |  |

Surely it would do the opposite. Clubs know we want to sell these players, so will just hold out to get them on a minimal fee. |
If there are multiple teams interested, it could spark a bidding war. Saying we wnat to sell doesn't stop the club turning down derisory offers. |  |

Struggling to get my head around this scale of change
I suppose given how ineffective we have been it’s unsurprising - but Downes and Dobra are BIG surprises for me, and Dozzell I did think had developed as a player
EADT are normally accurate
I’m not sure this scale of player turnover and squad change suggests we are going to get early success next term, this feels a long term project
Not sure we’ll be singing “he’s one of our own” for a while |
Maybe he's more impressed with the U18s who have done really well and feel they are more likely to make it big?

Downes is an interesting one though... he’s looked good in last two games
Previous to that he’s not been at his best and looked a bit lost
But for me on his day he’s a top championship player, and one of the best in league 1
He has grabbed games and dominated play in many games
I would suggest he needs good management rather than being shown the door
Can we really afford someone as talented????? |
Maybe Downes realised he needed to put a couple of shifts in to show clubs what he can do? He wouldn’t be the first to do that. Malicious and unfair speculation on my part, I know.
Given what has happened since his arrival, I think it’s fine to tell these people to move on. They’ve had their ‘free hit’ and it’s time to see if somebody else can ‘get a tune out of them’.
On a serious note, I am sure those he wants to stay will have been told.
