Is it actually possible to build a brand new promotion challenging team on 11:32 - May 13 by Herbivore | I hope that's the case, but none of the names linked so far scream Championship standard recruitment. |
True, although you could argue Connolly was reasonably decent for us in the Championship. But yes, interesting few weeks ahead, lets just hope he and Ashton get it right!

Any student of history knows that "5 year plans" were always completed in 2-3.

Is it actually possible to build a brand new promotion challenging team on 11:28 - May 13 by Vic | I think there is an acceptance among the owners that it may take two seasons to get out of this league. I don’t think it’s do or die this season. However, it is obvious that a big improvement is expected, a genuine and sustained push for the PO’s is a minimum I expect, and promotion the following. Anything less and Cook will be toast. |
What on earth would be the point of these new owners if the sole aim isn’t promotion next season? I’m fairly surprised Cook hasn’t been put under any pressure considering his dire performance already. As far as I can tell, their investment only pays off if we reach the PL. The minimum must be promotion immediately, not a vague “push for pormotion”.

Lincoln have been on an upward trajectory for the last 6 years or so. Easier to integrate new players into a winning mindset.

Because it's a load of superfan posturing nonsense. I've supported the club financially for years through my ST and then iFollow. I've never been one for booing at the ground or getting on the players' backs. But according to you I can't call myself a fan because I'm questioning some of the decisions being taken at the club currently. You can do one, pal.

Is it actually possible to build a brand new promotion challenging team on 11:27 - May 13 by Herbivore | It is at this level, Blackpool and Lincoln both made top 6 having done so and they have fewer resources than us. That said it's not easy and doesn't smack of a long-term approach. I suspect three or four of the academy products that Cook is looking to offload will play most of the rest of their careers at the level above this and one or two may even go higher still, so it seems odd to be getting rid at this point to presumably bring in some capable League 1 journeymen to replace them. Plenty of guesswork there, Herbs. I wouldn't be confident in saying that 3 or 4 of the academy lads will play Championship for the rest of their careers, and even less confident to say 1 or 2 may play Prem. Seen zero evidence to suggest that could happen. Could be wrong. They won't be replaced by L1 journeymen.....they'll most likely be top quality L1 and also some Championship lads. Most importantly they will have the quality and hunger to succeed, players Cook can trust. Doesn't smack of a long term approach? I think the plan is to go up, then compete in the Championship. We aren't building over 5 years. As we move up, lads will be replaced by lads who can take us higher. That is, I believe, the approach.

and why am i superfan posturing? Just go with it and see what happens, in 12 months time and if we are in the position of being Champions it will all have been wasted, complaining about something that we have no idea whether it will work or not, if not then thats the time, if it does work then great

We'll see, but there's a reason that the players we're letting go have been subject of interest from the Championship and above. I expect to see Downes, Dozzell, and Woolfenden end up there straight away if they can find a club willing to pay what we're asking. Dobra as well actually, though he'd probably get loaned out to a League 1 side for next season. Lankester and Bishop it's harder to call with their injury problems and how that might put people off, but I could see someone from the league above taking a punt if we're selling cheap. Signing Championship ready players in League 1 is no easy task, despite what some seem to think. The level of player we've been linked with to date doesn't suggest that we'll be signing proven Championship quality. I'm just not a huge fan of binning off players with plenty of talent and potential off the back of a disappointing year in a car crash of a team. I think this could be a window we'll come to regret.

Whilst it is an aim, merely having that does notguarantee achievement - and the club are wise to point that out. And if the club's sole aim is promotion then we are heading for failure. The aim must be to rebuild. To have a coaching staff that along with recruitment can identify and develop players - from youth upwards. Install a structure that works as one - something Lambert’s words have come to be shown to be correct, as those previously involved were not sat round a table together. So, I would suggest that having promotion as the sole ambition will not be what this season and further ahead will be about.
