Fair point, Portugal in 2016... on 22:30 - Jun 22 with 1047 views | Marshalls_Mullet |
Turgid stuff from England! (n/t) on 22:22 - Jun 22 by BloomBlue | And Denmark in 92. Portugal in 2016 started slowly. Makes me smile countries like Germany and Italy often finish the group stage of World Cup and Euro's with 2 wins,1 draw and scoring few goals and people talk about them being professional and clinical, England do it and they're boring. As you say Greece went a whole tournament with 1-0 wins nobody worries about that all they see is; Euro winners 2004. |
Drew all three of their group games (Iceland, Hungary and Austria), finishing third in their group. Didn't win a match within 90 mins until the semi final. [Post edited 22 Jun 2021 22:31]

As far as game plans go, we're doing ok. Like you, me and others have said, it's a tournament and any which way will do fine for now. It's what comes next that will be interesting. Do we have what it takes and if Southgate is capable of holding his nerve and making the right choices.

Turgid stuff from England! (n/t) on 22:05 - Jun 22 by MerseyBlue | Agreed, first half was the best we've played at the tournament, but that isn't saying much. Good to keep a clean sheet, good to top the group, but we look pretty uninspiring. It's all just too pedestrian, the safe option is always the priority. I disagree that we don't have the players to win it, I think we absolutely do. The mentality and tactics are the problem. The minute we turned the team with Saka at pace, they had no answer. You can't play like that for 90 minutes but you can do it a damn sight more. We improved, we were professional, but we're not frightening or enjoyable to watch. |
It's tournament football, so surely the aim is to manage the games *overall* in order to progress through each round to win the bloody thing? It isn't an Olympic ice-dancing contest, there aren't any marks for style. I'd rather get through a tad dully than go out early by playing "entertainingly".

Yeah I understand that point of view but when you have the capability to win a game comfortably, I think you're setting yourself up for a fall by not doing that. Yep, we're through to the Round of 16 but I'm pretty confident that's where it ends. The key point I'm making is that we're not playing to our strengths, we think we're being clever but we'll end up dicking about at the back and looking like numpties. You don't win trophies on the basis of entertainment but I don't see much point in trying to play the 'beautiful game' if you're going to actively avoid anything beautiful. Turgid stuff from England! (n/t) on 00:11 - Jun 23 with 944 views | Churchman | We played well in moments, particularly first half. When I look at Foden, Mount, Sako, Grealish, Chilwell and one or two others there are some exceptional players coming through. But we are not a team. Still, we won the group without conceding a goal. On the other hand, Scotland finished last. Bottom. 4th out of 4. The ITV4 panel looked upset and Souness has moved them from world beaters to mile short Stone Age. A good night overall.

The last 2 tournaments Portugal and France have been dull and defensive and won... Saka was MOM tonight - he looked really good. Sterling scored but other than that looked poor to me, caught offside many times, gave the ball away and couldn't beat anyone, yet once again he was the match winner so I guess we stick with him!!

You're right about Sterling...scored a nod in from 2 yards and then was poor, often getting in the way or giving it away. Saka showed Sterling how a fast forward should play...pace, beating people, and productive at the end of it. He did enough to play again on the right, and I'd drop Sterling for Foden. Sterling can then come on as pacy impact sub which is a better option than Rashford who has done nothing. Grealish did enough to stay in as well and we'll need his retention skills and free kick winning ability to take the pressure off. Guess Kane will stay although he seems a yard off it no matter what they say. Need to work on corner and free kick taking though, the delivery was poor last night.
