If we're chatitng about the same woman / game (Spain v Croatia?) then her accent was a surprise, but we need to get over this sort of thing (me too), so good! I liked the way she stoud her ground on Morata having a good game. She also had plenty of insight on the tactics which were well over my head, so job well done, I'd say. Ooh now deflection from misogynistic comments instead Predicted you'd double down and not own the remote possibility that you even phrased it poorly, This is exactly why you are involved in so many disagreements that drag on and on, as far as I can recall you have NEVER acknowledged a time when you have got it wrong - consistent at least I suppose

It's just a perfectly normal working-class London accent? I don't get why people are so agitated by it.

That's more or less my accent so I'm not bothered at all and it's nice to hear it on telly. Weirdly, northern accents appear to have been acceptable for some time, so glad London's catching up

For me it's just been a question of getting used to female rather male football commentators, after 50 years of hearing only male voices in the game. No idea why, but I do generally prefer lower rather than higher register voices, maybe something to do with my physical hearing. Anyway, now I've got used to them, am enjoying them - I really love hearing that Scouse (not everybody's cuppa I know) lass in particular.

Why can't this woman say Azpilicueta?! on 11:10 - Jun 29 by Butterbing | Hmm, I can see his point. A respectful way to phrase it would have been "the female commentator" or something along those lines. "This Woman" certainly made me feel that her gender was a big part of your discontent. I must also agree with many of the other commentators. Emma Hayes has been a decent co-commentator but her accent does rather grate on me. Also, her pronunciation of Azpilicueta was correct. We have just got very used to people pronouncing it incorrectly. |
Or just "she" | | | |

Are there no accents that you particularly like or don't like? It's not uncommon for that to be the case, surely?

Why can't this woman say Azpilicueta?! on 10:35 - Jun 29 by The_Flashing_Smile | I'm not just going to accept what you say I should, no. There were two commentators, one was a man the other a woman. If I said "this commentator" it wouldn't distinguish between them. Simple as that. But you're desperately trying to make this something it isn't so you can get on a high horse and wag a finger. |
The 'co-commentator' or 'analyst' work pretty well.

Not really, to be honest, it's all part of the rich tapestry of life etc.! But more than that, whether someone's accent sounds nice to me or not isn't a criteria I'd think it's fair to judge someone on.

Fair enough. I would like to think I wouldn't judge anyone on that basis, certainly. There are accents I'll admit to prefer listening to though, and ones I don't so much. I think, to Ryorry's point, there's an element of being used to certain accents and perhaps the familiarity and even reminisce that they bring. There's something about a Scottish accent for the 6 Nations commentary that just feels right.

No, because I don't think it is disrespectful or misogynistic to describe a woman as a woman. I'll happily say it wasn't my intent to be disrespectful or misogynistic, because it wasn't. But I'm not going to say I was wrong when I don't believe I was. If you were looking for her in a restaurant and asked the waiter if he'd seen her, you'd describe her as a woman would you not?

Look it up? I dunno, feel like women involved in men's football get enough stick that getting picky with someone's accent and pronunciation, whilst also not being arsed to check their name and addressing them fairly indelicately as "this woman", is always going to grate a bit? Even if not the intention, it just adds to a pile of pretty grim stuff.

I don't think anybody is taking offence at you referring to her as a woman. It was the use of "this woman" in the context of your negative post. It is very easy to interpret your phrasing to be derogatory. I believe you are potentially intentionally misunderstanding to create an argument so I shall leave it here.

Jesus wept, I was just making a quick comment about a commentator. I didn't think I'd need to spend time looking up their name, just as I wouldn't have if it was a male commentator I didn't know the name of. The righteous indignation over a throwaway comment that was nothing to do with gender is quite astonishing in this thread, and I like to feel like I'm a fairly modern/woke kind of guy, sorry 'person'.
