Town signings that exceeded expectations 21:07 - Jun 28 with 3297 viewsgainsboroughblue

It's fair to say that Matt Penney has been the signing so far that has generated the least excitement so far this summer. That is of course, not to say he can't go on and prove himself a shrewd signing, though from maybe being more of a squad player to begin with.

It's got me thinking though, which signings in ITFC history have gone on to have a much bigger impact than first thought when they joined. Tarrico is the one that springs most readily to mind.

Any others?

Only on loan, but Gio.

And, if we are accepting Sir Bobby, we must acknowledge Sir Alf too.

Steve Whitton.

Why waste money on dross like him thought I. Looks like he’s carrying a dozen bricks on a hod.

Proved to be a big part of the 1991/92 Div 2 Winning team.

Paul Goddard.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

McGoldrick. I remember him looking fairly average for Forest and their fans calling him “McGoaldrought” for a while. Hindsight and all that but it’s criminal we let him go for nothing.

Martyn Waghorn didn’t really excite me when we signed him, but wish we’d had more than a season from him

Alun Armstrong, it felt like we'd spunked good money for a serial reserve team player.

He went on to provide some quality memories though.

I guess Milts ought to get a mention too.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

Magic. He was great on loan, but when he signed he was on a totally different level. Kind of the opposite of Bullard.

Fabian Wilnis. I thought he was lightweight when we got him. Turned out to be a legend.

Havent been impressed with many signings since Evans was gifted the ckub - but I always thought Carlos Edwards did better than expected.

Mark Venus.

Was very underwhelmed when he came as part of the Sedgeley deal.

Yes this must be true at one stage he was being touted as player of the season in the Premier league .
