Even if you allow for hyperbole, emoting and any margin for error this account and the context is dreadful.

There really does need to be the option where people can say on a voting slip that they have no confidence in anyone standing so they can still exercise their right to be heard through the same process.

There has been times I have voted in protest but without conviction and it doesn't feel right when what I really want to say isn't an option available to me.

There is that option - to deliberately spoil your ballot paper. I have exercised that before.

Well yes, as have I.

But there should be a legitimate option.

Otherwise it can feel like it's just being petulant rather than a considered opinion.

We're talking about a yes/no Referendum, not people.

Obviously you have the right to not vote, but that doesn't exempt you from responsibility for the outcome.

I’m afraid it does.

I agree but I also think not voting is just about the only way to get through to the ruling class that they don’t represent me. This idea that somehow I owe the chaps that died at Omaha Beach my vote even if I give it to people I don’t agree with is insane and I think they would agree with me.

Exactly. This is why people died in the wars.

Freedom to have a choice

Not a directive to vote (although strangely I can see the benefits in that)

Are you seriously proudly boasting of the fact that you have neglected your democratic rights, that other people have paid for with their lives to protect?

What if everybody did that?

You'll be supporting Ukraine on Saturday then.

My mother in law moved to the UK from Berlin in 1963, my Mrs was born here, she also had to fill a form out even though she worked and paid taxes well into her 70’s , she’s 86 now.
She did get a reply in minutes which is the only good thing as it saved her from anymore stress.

Personally I think referendums are largely a bad idea.

Many issues are far too complex to be understood by the general public and decisions on them should be reserved for politicians who are elected to exercise their judgement and are guided by experts in the civil service.

Part of the role of politicians is to lead public opinion in a progressive direction and enact reforms that are the right thing to do, even if there is not necessarily public support for it at the time. A country reliant on referendums for public decision making often ends up being quite backwards - the reason Switzerland did not grant the women the right to vote until the 1970s and Liechtenstein until the 1980s was because women's suffrage could only be granted by a referendum. Two-thirds of (male) voters rejected women's suffrage in a 1959 referendum in Switzerland, and it was rejected three times in Liechtenstein

IMO the only things referendums should be used for are decisions that have no real political implications - perhaps stuff like choosing a new national anthem or flag.

And not forgetting the all-important issue of choosing the name for the new Antarctic Supply ship

Exactly the kind of level the great unwashed should be required to furrow their collective brows

And come up with a really cr@p decision

GEs are on Thursdays so shouldn't clash with any fixtures...

Unless we get to the Prem and finish high enough to enter the Europa whatever it's called..

Ah the old paid with their lives gambit. Tell me, did they pay with their lives so I could NOT vote for people I didn’t like? Or does it not work that way?

It doesn't have to be 'paid with their lives'? And why just mention Omaha Beach?

The massive queues to vote in the first democratic elections (after the fall of apartheid) in South Africa were a testament to the opportunity to join in the process that had been previously denied, and they took courage too as some intimidating tactics were happening.
