Even if you allow for hyperbole, emoting and any margin for error this account and the context is dreadful.

It's getting to the stage now where we all know someone who has been refused entry on returning to the United Kingdom or is being threatened with deportation, isn't it?

I can understand when the racists give out their misguided "they're not kids" type huffing, but what purpose does targeting an elderly with dementia serve exactly?

How does it even stop or deter people? It's that mid 20th century fascism via paperwork mindset isn't it? Yet try and find the government adopting this attitude to anyone with a PPE contract...

The process for settled status seems ridiculously onerous to me. Send 1 P45 or an NI number and surely that proves you"ve lived here Dec 2020? So your rights should be extended.

Why the need for all the forms have no idea.

To add there are around 500k who have applied and are yet to have had their applications processed. As things stand, those individuals won't be able to take a new rental agreemeent rent or start a new job from July 1st.

Based on what I hear about the stuff my partner's (immigration) clients have to go through, I've had to conclude that many of the people who work in the Home Office are as bad as the Home Secretary. Applications are often rejected for no valid reason and almost every appeal is successful - the mindset just seems to be to reject as many as possible the first time round in the hope that some people give up and don't try again.

They just don’t care.

People like this lady are collateral damage to be sacrificed at the cult of Brexit.

Our country has been massively diminished, possibly irreversibly.

"the mindset just seems to be to reject as many as possible the first time round in the hope that some people give up and don't try again."

It's an entrenched directive throughout all services.

Be it a claim for Housing, PIP, ESA; pretty much anything.

Punish anyone who tries to claim anything they are entitled to and hope to dwindle the numbers applying rather than address their needs.

Off-topic - initially I tried to tell myself that not all Brexiters were the same..that some voted for it for various reasons. No doubt some are fervent racists and some possibly quite liberal. But now, I don’t distinguish- they are all to blame for this heartlessness- all guilty for the rise in xenophobia and hatred, all guilty of families feeling that they are not wanted in this country and moving out despite building up relationships and history in this country.

Everyone who voted for Brexit, or who couldn’t be arsed to vote for no reason other than you couldn’t be bothered is guilty of this. F**k you.

Oh, and if anyone reports this as abuse - f**k you as well sidewards and hard.

Probably the most deliberately evil thing any UK government has done for a long time, the "hostile environment". Don't make outright rules to limit people coming in, just be gratuitously unpleasant not only to those who might come, but also those already here (and who may have been so for decades, or from a very early age).

And it was, of course, extended as a philosophy to other areas, such as benefits, social- and health-care.

I am a fervent anti-Brexit but your sentiment is overlooking that an element of the population were tricked/lied to and/or simply didn't realise what they were signing up to.

There will be a number of people who see stories like this one who will feel betrayed.

No decent person voted for this behaviour, although I don't doubt for a moment there are plenty of others who did.

Your second paragraph. Not true is it. Many people in this country didn't actually know what they were voting for because (1) The EU and its laws etc were way above what most ordinary folk could ever understand and (2) people were lied too about what leaving actually meant.

(3) People were too lazy to do their own research on such an important subject before voting and were pretty pleased at jeering it all on anyway.

Decades paying taxes but you still have to full in forms galore. And it's worse cos you dont get a card or a passport visa type stamp to wave at a border official, employer, policeman or someone checking your status for a rent agreement.

It is all electronic, so you can't actually prove your status if the computer is down. You can merely point someone to do their own search. People who have the legal right to remain are reliant on a computer system playing ball.

Anyone tried to get a Dvla doc recently? Well that's to prove ownership of a car, this is for the right to live/work/rent in a country many have indeed lived in for 30 years.

Embarrassing way to treat people who have lived here for years.

I'll have my opinion and say what I want to say and if you don't like it then tough. The facts are that people were lied to and some voted for brexit on the back of those lies just as people do at every general election.

If you were stupid enough to believe what was written on the side of that bus and voted on the same side as people like Farage, Gove and Francois then you are part of the problem.

But you could say that about every general election. People are fed propaganda and lied to every five years and many regret putting their vote in a certain box once they realise what they really voted for. It happens all the time. I think what has made brexit such a bitter and divisive subject is people can't change it in five years. There are many people who voted brexit who wish they could.

That's like saying nobody should have voted Labour over the last few years because they had an element of antisemitism in the party. We'll have to agree to disagree but I stand by my initial remarks that some people voted brexit on the back of lies and many wish they hadn't. I bid you goodnight.
