My bad. Thought you had typed something you heard on the radio and it was your English which needed some work!

Although I will admit to finding her commentary a trifle hyperbolic.

Issy, on the R5 commentary had the most bizarre pronunciation of Schmeichel. She managed to add an extra syllable.

Sher-Micheal.

Her co-commentator kept repeating Schmeichel's name, pronouncing it correctly. It was almost as though she was giving her a hint. Which kept being ignored.

I noticed that, but to be fair they did make a good team and brought the tension of what turned out to be a finely poised game to the listener.

They were both very good.

I did wonder if the mispronunciation was some kind of off-air bet, it was so bizarre.

Probably done by voice recognition software - and no, I have no evidence for the assertion.

I've seen 3 threads on women commentators on here during the Euros. One was complaining about Emma Hayes correctly pronouncing Azpilicueta and ended up attacking her tone and accent. Another started by saying Alex Scott was lovely and swiftly descended into ogling. Now this one with yet more nitpicking of spelling that moves on to more general petty nonsense. Can we not?

I presume you meant to type 'Can we not be sexist?' for your final sentence. We can certainly intend not to be sexist; whether we achieve that aim can be a subjective judgement. I do think there is an issue that is not at all petty or nit picking in despairing at a spelling mistake on a platform like the BBC Radio 5 text feed during a major game at the Euros. It is seen by many thousands and a few will either be confused or will have a false impression 'confirmed' thus ensuring that the mistake is replicated many times over. Eventually our language, which is capable of so much, becomes too degraded to be capable of nothing more than the most basic levels of communication...with constant requests for clarification slowing things down even further.

To me it doesn't matter whether Vicki Sparks or Mark Chapman makes the error (or their work placement runner or a piece of voice recognition software), I would rather they just didn't foul up in the first place. In fact, if it was Mark Chapman I would jump on the faux pas more severely because there is something in his mildly smirking presentation manner that winds me up. I would much rather it was Vicki Sparks presenting 'Match of the Day 2'...except when she gets overexcited and I get disappointed that she sounds like a 1970s male commentator.

It is[/] disproportionately about women, isn't it though? Maybe people could take a day off from pedantically criticising women for existing?
