I don't use facebook so I don't know about that, but is a solution to all the madness on twitter to expand the blue tick thing for everyone? I don't know what the process is to get a blue tick, but if you could then change your profile so that only blue ticks can comment on your posts or @include you. I'm not saying it should be enforced that everyone HAS to get a blue tick, but public figures could have that option that only verified people could engage with you.

Hmm, I'll stick it in the football category as it's about the recent racist tweets at the England players.

What madness are you referring to?

I use twitter and my timeline is 100% full of reasonable, interesting people that I have chosen to follow. I do not see anything that I don't want to, nor do I go looking for it.

Like the real world, if I look hard enough I will find people with extreme views or thoughts that I will not agree with so I choose to not associate myself with them. I am not sure why people find that so hard.

I'm guessing you aren't a high profile individual that has 100's of messages calling you every pejorative under the sun every time you tweet.

Absolutely not.

Like Bluebluebluex2 said, Twitter de facto works by you *choosing* to see only who you want anyway - don't want to read idiots? Unfollow them, don't follow them in the first place, mute them or block them (which is 2-way, they wouldn't then be able to read your posts - something that's been badly needed on here for a long time, would save you Admins a lot of aggro in the long run dealing with spats between posters).

The option already exists for "only blue ticks can comment on your posts or @include you" anyway - all you have to do is turn your account into a 'protected' one. That way, you have to approve accounts before they can follow you.

See my answer to Gav. You've never understood how to best use Twitter.

And as I've said multiple times before, but you seem to keep ignoring, I'm all for everyone on every social media platform having to verify their real ID, complete with geographical address, via photos of passports or driving licences, as a way of ensuring accountability. This would still allow people to create usernames to prevent real-life stalking.

Something certainly needs to be done. I do often click on the profiles of those who are spouting the most guff and offensive content, and it's a common theme that many (not all) are seemingly new accounts, with minimal follows. I'm not entirely convinced there aren't bots behind a lot of them, especially the political ones but I'll keep my tin hat away for now. One thing I'm sure of is social media has been a source of huge political disruption and social divides, and that might be of benefit to some nations looking to capitalise.

Either way, something certainly needs to be done to curb the behaviours we're seeing.

There *are* a lot of bots (usually spottable by a combo of no proper avatar, a username that includes a string of numbers - which means it's been partly allocated by twitter rather than being 100% chosen by the user), very few followers or history) and that *is* a problem which Twitter needs to do more about.

Would be rectified by using ID verification as mentioned above of course - I think will eventually happen, but far too slowly. At least twitter are making efforts now, unlike fb, which has become a real rogue org imho & which I no longer use except for personal messaging with real-life friends.

I think Twitter should employ Phil to monitor it.

He does a good job of that on here and it would fill his down time between matches.

Having social media accounts linked to ID would be a terrible thing to happen. It’s pretty much unworkable from the outset, in terms of actual infrastructure required and that different countries will have different laws on these kinds of things so how will it be governed? Also, if, for example, you were gay in a country where homosexuality is illegal, you’d be putting your life at risk by signing up to social media or having to sacrifice the freedom of expression you get with an anonymous account.

Further to that, plenty of people seem content to post awful stuff under their real names on Facebook, and when you have politicians, for example, stoking the flames of racism then what does it matter that we know DarthMaul69 is some middle aged bloke from London?

The issue of ‘how best to use Twitter’ is a nonsense as well - it pushes the blame onto the person on the receiving end of the abuse. Does Marcus Rashford not use Twitter in the best way? Of course not. He gets racist abuse because other people are racist idiots.

My post re how best to use Twitter was a specific reply to J2 & our previoius discussions on the subject, not general nor targeted at any other individual.

Your point re, eg gay rights in other countries, is a good one that I hadn't considered. Do you have a better solution than the option for account holders to go 'protected' that I already mentioned?

Edit: forgot to say that the point of verification is that people like "DarthMaul69, some middle aged bloke from London" would be thrown off the platform & not allowed to return.

I feel you'd still be anon to the outside world but twitter would know who you are. If you committed a racial or homophobic crime then there'd be a fast route to give those details to the police.

Yes it would be difficult to manage but at the moment its too difficult to bring people to justice. It's also optional too in my suggestion, so if you don't want to, don't. But if a public figure only wants verified people to engage, then they can.

Perhaps it just wouldn't work because to become verified you're matching ID with a named person, not being anon.

What happens when the Assad regime or China's government requests the information linked to dissident accounts though? In the latter case there's every chance they are capable of hacking that information with severe consequences for individuals or their families.

I'm still aiming this at our issues, and it being voluntary. I'm not even sure if Twitter can be used in China.

"Voluntary" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in my idea. Not forcing anyone to do it. If you want to have access to the celebs, then you need to be able to prove who you are.

They are protected by being anonymous. It’s on social media companies to do a better job of monitoring and dealing with abuse rather than try and hide away the problem with something unworkable that will negatively affect a lot of people.

As above, it shouldn’t take someone having their identity linked to their account for them to be banned from using the platform.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.
