Countries from 44-86 on the medal table - all 43 of them - have mustered as many Gold medals as Great Britain.

Only 1 fewer than Germany, France and Spain combined.

The press will probably still grumble something about disappointment and highlight where we failed.

Yep, all got less golds than Essex in the Olympics. Can add Ireland to the list too.

Yep, Essex, Caerphilly and the Kenny household would all fit that bill...

All countries who haven’t superheated and “doped” their Olympic funding?

Delighted for the individuals and their teams given the effort and sacrifice irrespective of how many millions are ploughed in, but I find the resulting medal orgy a little “meh”.

When the Australians were caning us at everything I don’t remember too many people getting hung up on the fact that they supported their athletes and tried a bit to hard to be good. Much better to have athletic role models than lazy fat fcks in my book - so worth every penny.

It’s not even a lot of money (third of a billion) in real terms. Or a million per athlete.

But the Australians, Chinese, Soviets and East Germans all doing it doesn’t particularly change how I feel about industrialising the Olympics and medal-winning. I didn’t like it when our athletes were on the other end of it then.

There doesn’t actually seem to be much of a statistical link that medal success boosts participation either. So maybe a more grassroots approach or boosting minority and lower-performing sports might create a few more options for youngsters. I think they missed a trick with sports like basketball and handball even if it will take decades to win anything.
