Bailey Clements: a new club record? 19:25 - Aug 10 with 3355 viewsTractorFrog

When Bailey Clements starts against Newport tonight, it will be his first professional appearance for Ipswich Town since the 13th August 2019 (against Luton) - almost two years ago. Is this the record for longest time between professional appearances for Ipswich Town, not including players who left and then returned years later? If not, what is the record? The thing that suggests it is not a record is that Ben Morris will beat it if he ever plays for Ipswich again, so there have surely been players with similar careers in the past.

They'd all laugh at me if they knew what I was trying to do. To create a new strain of super-wine in half-an-hour with a fraction of nature's resources and a FOOL for an assistant. 'Bernard Black, he's mad,' they'd say, 'he's insane, he's dangerous.' Well I'll show them! I'll show them all!

Not the same is it?

The OP is talking about between 1st and 2nd appearance while still at the club.

I remember him as a name around the club when I was a small kid. Just looking him up, played 66 times in 10 years. It seemed a regular thing back then with clubs like Town, especially in their earlier league days when it was customary to have a few local lads picked up from amateur clubs nearby, some of whom gave up the £8 per week in the factory for the £10 per week from Town (during the football season only).

Another player around that time was Frank Treacy (19 games in 6 years) whom we called Treacle and who scored goals in handfuls in the reserves but could never repeat the trick in his very occasional first team outings.

Glenn Pennyfather and Frank Yallop both seemed to have long spells of not playing, pretty sure when Yallop scored against Spurs and Man Utd he had only just come back into the team after over a year.

From memory both Matt Richards and Dean Bowditch went out on loan for a couple of seasons before making a couple of appearances on their return.

Bowditch had a series of loans, but 2007-08 was the only season in which he didn't play a single Town game, while he was on loan at Northampton & Brighton.
Richards had 2 loan spells at Brighton, but still played for Town in every season until his departure.

Aidan Collins made his debut on the final day of 2002/03 and then didn't play at all in the next two seasons before making four more appearances in 05/06.

The undisputed winner of this title is Dennis Thrower.

He made his second appearance for the club against Walsall in Division 3 South on 12 September 1956, when he was 18.

His third appearance came against Blackpool in Division 1 on 28 August 1962, 2,176 days - almost six years - later. In the meantime, Town had been promoted twice and won the league championship, of course.

He went on to play a total of 31 games before leaving in 1965.

He always looked quite cultured, but his position of left-half was that taken by the incomparable John Elsworthy.

Dave Deacon got badly injured against Millwall on 21/03/53 and didn't play again that season. The following season he broke his leg in a Reserve fixture against Fulham (24/10/53) and his next appearance in the first team was on 27/12/55 in the 3-1 home win over Colchester.

Are there likely to be players who played pre and post World War 2? Must be a 5 or 6 year gap.

Like those who were in Escape to Victory.
