When Cook employed his mates as coaches 21:48 - Aug 17 with 5100 viewsgtsb1966

I was slightly concerned. I'm even more concerned now.

I wonder if a quick fix might be to ask Butcher to return as second in command. He's someone who has been a manager so therefore has been through the ups and downs, has defensive knowledge and might be able to lend an ear to Cook and perhaps proffer some advice?

Of course, the risk is undermining Cook so it really needs to be with his agreement but his reaction to Cheltenham's dominance tonight was little short of baffling.

If only ...

I'd find it admirable if the "new regime" were big enough to admit they got the decision re Butcher wrong, but suspect they'd see it as losing face & be unlikely to do a U-turn.

Whilst I agree with what you say. We lost tonight due to lack of fight and desire compared to the opposition.
This is not down to coaching, but is totally inexcusable from the team and management.

I agree with this. The coaches thing is a red herring. Nobody knows what these people do. For many managers these people are just cone carriers and yes men. For every Taylor to Clough there is a Robson or Ferguson to a it doesn’t matter They’ve been in the professional game for years so should know it.

Picking on peoples qualifications when you don’t know what they actually mean is just a way of putting the boot in. I don’t care if he employs Sooty and Sweep to do the coaching. His business as is owning the performances and results, which are a mile short of what they should be. He is accountable for them now.

Lack of fight and desire compared to the opposition is unacceptable and if it continues for any length of time, Cook will be gone very quickly.

Weren’t Ferguson’s assistants extremely influential? My impression is that ‘proper ‘ Man U fabs would be able to tell you who the number 2 was in any given season , and how it showed. Part of Ferguson’s skill was in freshening up that role every few years .

I don't think Butcher, great player that he was, is that great a coach, to be honest.

Has Jeffers ever coached a first team?

Something I've wondered about for a while is whether Leam Richardson was the real brains behind Paul Cook's previous successes. Cook is undoubtedly a great motivator, which increasingly puts into question the roles of Kitman Carney and ex-player Roberts, but today made him look tactically adrift. The substitutions came too late to wrest back control of the match, and were odd to say the least. Jackson for Pigott? Then removing Bonne meant we lost a main target man and the 'fresh legs' did nothing to get the ball to Edwards. A Dobra might have done.

I have no doubt the team is now formed of better quality players and will GEL eventually - and it's too soon to expect miracles - but the coaching staff, as others have said here, is incredibly weak and leaves much to be desired.

I’m not sure they did get the decision wrong re Butcher, much as I loved watching him play. His managerial record is pretty average so what would he bring over and above passion?

I’m contradicting myself slightly here, but I wish he’d got Kieron to be assistant. KD is a good student of the game, has a lot of experience and at his age needs to be stepping up if he wants a managerial career.

I'd have preferred to see KD promoted to coach ahead of any of those brought in but I don't think he's ready to be sole second in command - we need someone with knowledge and experience for the role to help Cook out.

Does Roberts really have no badges? That’s inexcusable.

He was paying with Accrington when he resigned and joined us as a coach. He is supposedly taking coaching badges this summer

"err ang about lads, I've just got to pop off for a couple more days, to learn the job ..................... I am supposed to be teaching you "

Most players when coming to the end of their career and are looking to be moving into coaching have already qualified before they hang up their boots. They also start at a lower level (youth) before progressing upward.

They do not stop playing one week, then start coaching the first team the next. How the hell is he supposed to know what to do ? Copy Mr Crane the Baker ?

There seems to be a rather too cosy group of ex Accrington, Wigan players and mates of PC.

As to this 'players need to gel' stuff, how come we never heard any of this before the season started ? Burton, Morecambe and Cheltenham looked an easy start to the season. Chuck in a cup game against L2 Newport and many would have been thinking of four straight wins - not 3 defeats and a fortuitous draw.

However, it was the way Cheltenham were able to rip us apart in the 2nd half that gives serious grounds for concern - as it suggests a lack of tactical nous on the part of PC. If good players alone won games, there would be no need of a manager and coaches. They don't, that's why the latter are important.

I wonder now if PC and his mates are up to it.

No we don’t. If you are the manager you are the manager. The assistant is just that. He should do the manager’s bidding. If Cook needs helping out, I.e he can’t do the job on his own in the way 100s of managers have done before him, he should be got rid of tomorrow.

Someone (can't remember who) said he was happier with our defence tonight due to Burgess coming in & forming a good partnership with Woolfy, but our defence, going on previous match reports was poor, hence thoughts of Butcher.

KD would have been my first choice! but given what he said about following Dyer Jnr to support him & his career, he was never going to stay in Suffolk.

Impossible

I was assured by loads on here that the only reason Cook failed last season was because it was all the mean nasty players faults and we had to get rid of them all instantly and then everything would be amazing.

Any manager, in any walk of life, needs someone to bounce off - someone to exchange ideas with and, if it feels like the team is failing, give a little support and no be afraid of questioning the approach if needed. In a good relationship barely anyone but the manager and the assistance will recognise this happening but it does. It’s like I said elsewhere, if Cook wants to exchange ideas with someone, who does he have? No one with any reasonable knowledge or experience whatsoever.

Thing is people pointed this out very fairly at the time and were abused on here for doing so.

‘Abused’? Hardly! Since when has dIsagreeing with someone been abusing them? Actually don’t answer that!

That said, the way things have started is concerning. I’ve given Cook the benefit of the doubt, though not particularly agreeing with his approach. Each game this goes on the more concerned I am. Not yet sure at what point my support stops, but stating the obvious - he has a lot less time than he had a few weeks ago!

My only consolation is that I’m sure his employers feel exactly the same. They will not sit back and let things drift like ME did.

He’s got people to bounce ideas off and challenge. These people have played the game professionally for decades. If they don’t know the game inside out now, they never will. They’re putting out a football team for goodness sake. Paul Hurst and Paul Lambert have a UEFA coaching licence, years of experience (PL played at Dortmund - not sure he mentioned it….) and didn’t know a team from a teapot.

What exactly do these qualifications bring to the table? I’d love to know. As it is, management is about bringing in people you can work with and getting them to do what you want. Suggestions and challenge are important, but ultimately you are accountable; it’s not a democracy. It’s about getting the right blend and this is far more important than any paper qualification.

Cook is very experienced. To suggest he needs experience to help out (and doesn’t realise it) is to suggest he is not up to the job. He may not be, but the worlds greatest coach won’t change that.
