The Clive Woods thread got me thinking. Aside from those who stayed in the game in one role or another (pundits, presenters, coaches etc), there've been a lot of players passing through Portman Road over the years and most, I imagine, ended up in real jobs. I once met an ex-Swindon keeper from the sixties and asked him how it felt to be a hero to thousands and then a nobody just a year later. He laughed and said, 'it was only bloody Swindon...'.

On a Town note, I can only remember three off the top of my head: Larry Carberry (Class of '62) was a stevedore on the docks, Pat Sharkey (Class of... well, mid-70s reserves mostly) became a teacher and, as noted recently, Nicky Forster is a motivational speaker/life coach.

Bum, make that five: Paul Cooper's golf things and Eric Gates' farm.

Anyone got any more?

And apologies if this has been done before: I'm new round these parts.

Alan Sunderland ran the Halberd Inn.

Didn't Laurie Sivell run a fish stall in Lowestoft as well?

Colin Viljoen was another ex-footballer turned landlord for a while, his pub was in Buckinghamshire. Could have tried asking him, what with drink driving laws, for a lift there and back but...

Butch only really backed the insurance brokers as an investment. Probably helped locally to use his name. It was was also setup and running while still playing.

I think when Butcher played for Rangers he was also a hotelier for a while. Being an insurance agent when your hotel business was not doing so well could be handy in the event of a fire but I think that is more of a Nodge thing...

Clive Baker has been working at an insurance broker in the city since retiring from playing. Use to see him on my daily commute. So short for a keeper.

Shout out also to Paul Mason who runs a hotel in Southport.

Neil Gregory is a office manager for a financial services company.

John Elsworthy, one of the 5 players to win Div 3 (S), Div 2 and Div (1) medals with Town ran a shop (possibly with a post office) for years up by the Foxhall Rd/ Heath Road roundabout in what might now be the firework shop (but others might be able to be more precise).

I think Big Al Hunter either volunteered or worked in a local special school.

I think that may be the most recent post office. I think originally it may have been on the other corner across Heath Rd.

During the Seventies and early Eighties he was running the Post Office on Felixstowe Road (near the junction with Derby Road / Hatfield Road), ever helpful.

In the 70's Mick McNeill had a sports shop (called McNeill's), then David Johnson (the 1st) opened Jonty's in the same street.
Kevin Beattie ran Henley Cross Keys for a while.

I had my first Saturday job in McNeill’s shop in Bury St Ed’s. A dream job for a sports mad 15 year old boy!
