France the rogue state 10:35 - Oct 29 with 1414 views | giant_stow | Some of the French govt's language at the moment makes our clowns look dignified and statesmanlike. Anyone want to take a punt on how this ends? Do we get to sail that aircraft carrier into Paris?

France the rogue state on 10:58 - Oct 29 with 1349 views | IpswichKnight | Not sure how we have managed this considering our lot are totally incompetent but whatever we are doing is working, the French want a rise out of us so they can get the rest of the EU on side ( so far they’ve been told to get lost by the other 20 odd ). We should carry on ignoring them as it’s working! Of course this has nothing to do with an Election happening in France soon😉 Interestingly a French nuclear attack sub has just completed a visit to the RN attack subs base in the Clyde a clear indication that 99% of what Macron is doing is for a domestic audience, think that’s the first visit by a French boat for a very very very long time.

Boris will still get to sail a Navy Frigate around the channel too. Give him time...

Don't be cross with me, but I just checked the Express site and the latest salvo (not official) is that if they cut the power, we'll nationalise EDF in the UK.

Just a guess though - there's votes in antagonising the French - and it would be nice to see the lights go out in Jersey.

If Britain doesn't have the capacity to supply power to our own country, that's surely our own fault?

I think there's truth in your criticism, but its also a little unfair. I believe the UK has imported lecy when wind power's not being able to take the strain, owing to weather. I *think* i read the Uk has also been over-quick to turn off coal power plants, before there was anything native to replace them so maybe you have a point there. But then again, the assumption has obviously been that our good buddies in France would be happy to export power to cover shortfalls like a friendly nation and not turn all Putin on Ukraine about it.

Not sure that one hangs together - the UK has no election coming and hasn't reacted to the dispute with disproportionate threats (to date!), unlike the French on both counts. Who knows the technicalities of whether each individual French boat really has a claim to fish in Uk waters - its a technical issue beyond anyone who isn't directly involved, I'd imagine.

Think it is more that a destabilised Europe has traditionally been best for England, due to Britain being an island. But I don't see much scope for playing the mainland powers off one another in the near to medium future.
