Why stop at Ukraine?

This could get very messy very quickly, I just hope there are a few level headed people within the Kremlin that are looking at eachother and thinking this has gone way too far.

It hasn't yet, from their perspective. Putin has gambled and, so far, not lost. The crunch will come if he proposes attacking a NATO country - that could have altogether more serious consequences.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Despite the fall out, Russia will be fully aware of how far the West would be prepared to go to defend Ukraine and have decided it was worth it. They will also be aware how far NATO will be prepared to go, and will take that into their calculations.

Unfortunately for all of us, as he would want to go down swinging.

The real objective is to overthrow the current democracy that is Ukraine and to replace it with a puppet regime much like in Belarus. This is the only way to form a buffer between Russia and Countries that are members of NATO.

If Ukraine were to become part of Russia then Russia would find it was bordered by another two NATO countries in the shape of Poland & Romania which clearly is not the solution Putin seeks.

Slovakia and Hungary too

But you’re allowing one sovereign nation dictate to another what it should and shouldn’t do - and bowing down to Russia in the bargain.

Although, playing Devil's advocate here, that argument is quite porous if we are holding the United States up as a paragon, given some of their history in Central America and the Caribbean.

Wow. That took some trawling through.

11 pages of Waco saying Putin might be being quite reasonable here. Just think what it is like for him having a country that used to be a part of your Empire on your doorstep able to be independent and then you can see why it is OK for him to invade it and force it to be a part of that Empire again.

For comparison let's consider a democratic nation decides to leave a trading block that it belongs to. It remains bordering and having to trade with that trading block. Would it be reasonable for that trading block to say "you can't make any trade deals with any other nations and, if you do, we will invade you and force you to rejoin our trading block".

As long as everyone apologising for Putin is absolutely OK with that scenario, then they are at least not hypocritical. And, in that case, can we rejoin the EU in order to avoid the threat of that war?

Do you think that sanctions could affect the operations and fortunes of the Russian underworld and other shadowy individuals? Could this interruption and inconvenience lead them to decide it’s better if Putin just goes away as such?
