That's your opinion which is completely fine. My opinion is just to double-check which could potentially avoid immediate conflict
Though Putin didn’t just want guarantees regarding Ukraine. He wanted NATO membership revoked from countries which already hold it. Nothing was ever going to be enough for him at this point.
Quite a lot of US military jets hoovering over Poland and Eastern Europe doing loops. I can only imagine the naval warfare/stand off that is happening now as well.
We are potentially only a handful of days from a full blown world war - China can join Russia and seize there chance to invade Taiwan and other smaller states. Heck, even North Korea and India might get in on this too!
Worrying times but obviously prays for the safety of civilians trapped in Ukraine right now.
And I feel like I need to end on a lighter tone.
What do Wacko and Pamela Anderson have in common?
They are both partial to riding Putin's peepee.
The jets doing the loops are in-flight refueling tankers and RC-135 Rivet Joint signal intelligence gathering platforms. The jets they are refueling generally don't have their transponders active so don't show up on Flightradar. Given the number of tankers about though, there must be many aircraft active. Up until today, even the Global Hawk drones have had their transponders on (usually callsign ForteXX), so have been visible flying daily from Sicily to patrol the Russian and Belarus borders for hours on end. Today they've either turned off their transponders or are not risking overflying Ukrainian airspace.
Edit: Looks like the Global Hawks left Ukrainian airspace last night and took up patrol over the Black Sea in International airspace to the South West of the Crimea instead.

Yes true. This is his big d*ck swinging, trying to use the situation to get a better deal. But it could be that he's asking for more and giving the West the chance to compromise (like how you always ask for more than you want in a deal).
Really, who knows, I'm just offering an opinion that a lot of people far more enlightened that anyone on this board holds as well

It obviously wasn’t a serious comparison, just to point out how the West would react if Russian troops were moving ever westwards. Look at the Cuban Missile Crisis (though that was weaponry rather than troops).
I'll let you into a secret, my reply wasn't serious either...
However, if Putin wanted a false flag for an invasion then you might have just provided one, or the SNP could just say to Westminster 'give us our independence or we invite the Russians in.'
On which note, Sturgeon has fired another shot at Salmond yesterday:

No, just give him the assurances that Ukraine will stay neutral
Why can't Ukraine just do what they would like to do in the best interests of their own citizens? Who next has to leave NATO to appease this despotic cúnt?
You can't appease despotic dictators, they will always want more - as Guthers has clearly explained he has set unreasonable and inflexible demands already, and will continue to do so

They can, but sadly there'll be consequences from far higher up the food chain like we're seeing right now. In an ideal world despotic leaders won't exist.
I think your last point is debatable, hence this long discussion. I won't go over old ground, except here's the short beginning to Mearsheimer's argument that I posted to Guthrum:

Who knows! Goring convinced Hitler that the RAF needed to be defeated before a land invasion could be attempted.
I am not sure the RAF did need to be taken out of the equation if Germany had simply thrown sheer numbers of troops across the channel.
The Germans would never had enough troops to hold the beachhead.... they might have held a small area for a few days, but would not have had the transport to get heavy weaponry and supplies to where they were needed in time
The Royal Navy would have decimated their invasion fleet and shredded their resupply efforts
The Germans were relying on barges towed by tug boats to cross the channel, with 2 or 3 barges being towed by each tug. Unless they were able to secure a port for unloading, they were going to struggle to get materiel off the barges onto a beach
Bear in mind that much of the German Army mobile units were horse drawn at this point in the War, horses might not have responded well to a long choppy boat ride across the Channel

But if sovereign states want to join the EU why should they be denied simply because it will upset Russia?

Thanks for this. This is good healthy academic debate, but doesn't mean one or other is right or wrong. I'm glad you've finally moved away from all that anti-vax flex nonsense and actually engaged properly

So are you (and the original author) saying yes - these countries should have been denied entry to the EU because it would upset Russia?
No I'm saying there should be an assurance that Ukraine won't join NATO. That is what has seemingly tipped Putin over the edge.
The original author thought it was wrong for Ukraine to give up their nuclear programme in the first place - EDIT: and yet all the western powers disagreed - and as a result appeased a dictator. This is a total grey area

But again you’re saying that a sovereign state should be told what it can or cannot do in terms of foreign policy because another state might get upset. How does that work in a practical sense? If Ukraine didn’t want to be part of NATO that’s fine, or if they were being coerced into it, but neither of those are true.
I did see the article’s author had said Ukraine should have kept their nuclear weapons - I bet they wish they had now.
