Will he be registered as a play as well as a coach. Would be decent back up for Walton.

He spent most of his career in the Championship and PL though didn't he

Indeed. Memorably picking the ball out of the net at the Churchmans end after 20 seconds one afternoon, having just been lobbed by his mate Darren Bent.

It seems a little weird that a keeper is going to be working mainly with the forwards. I'm sure that Grant will be familiar with the strategies that McK knows from ManU, and can help implement them. But I would have thought Grant would work with the goalies.

It is interesting.

Im not sure that the position as a player is as much of an issue as many make out. Just because you play as a GK doesn't mean you cant coach outfield players.

Dino Zoff was a reasonably successful manager.

Manure is a club rotten to the core and is failing utterly. I am not particularly confident that hiring their ex-players as coaches, or bringing in their kids is going to benefit us.

Grant played just a couple of games for Manure and was only ever a lower league stopper himself. It's a bit like the Gary Roberts thing, just what is this guy bringing to the table other than needing a job and McKenna giving him one? Who's looking at this? Paul Cook brought in a vastly underqualified coaching team and it hurt badly, if we aren't going to learn from that then we will run into the same problems.

No more jobs for the boys, and that's including our own. We should be going out and getting the best coaches, not hiring an ex Manure reserve keeper because he needs a job now.

Give over, you massive fanny.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

That's a little unfair given Grant wouldn't have signed for United to be anything more than a back up, and probably had half an eye on his path into coaching when moving there. Also you don't sign a goalkeeping coach based on their credentials as a goalkeeper, or David Seaman would be taking more calls from Premier League clubs than he does from Dancing on Ice. That said, lets not forget Grant spent his whole career at a higher level than we're currently operating at.

He's clerly been recruited because McKenna rates him as a coach having worked with him.

Yes, that’s pretty much my thoughts too.

Thanks for typing them out, clive.

Raised eyebrows when I saw it was first team coach but quickly reassured by his preparing for coaching.

Truly impaired.

How can McKenna rate Grant as a coach when Grant doesn't actually have any coaching experience?

You don't get your UEFA A and be in line for a Pro Licence with no experience. These qualifications require extensive evidence of coaching experience. He might not have been employed in a coaching role but that's a different thing.

He would have. You have to put in a certain amount of coaching activity when doing the course. And that's not just standing you're for one session either. The A licence consists of a hell of a lot of hours.

a niche perspective

Sure, McKenna knows Grant, we don't. At the moment, we have a lot of confidence in McKenna so we're inclined to give him the benefit of doubt on what would appear questionable decisions. How we perform next season will be the acid test, but all managers make mistakes & inexperienced managers are more likely to make a few mistakes.

He has coaching experience. He's just not been employed as a coach.
