Would you have another go at Coulson? 09:17 - Jun 15 with 1551 viewsiamipswich

From the little we saw last season, he looked a good option for the LWB role which is seemingly a tough one to fill.

Or would you be too put off by the injury-hit season just gone? Before then he seemed to have a decent fitness record at Middlesbrough.

Of the 6 players we had at left back / left wing back last season he was definitely the pick of the bunch.

But when we have Walton, Morsy, Celina, Chaplin type quality, we should be able to get a top class player there and Coulson, despite being better than his colleagues, was still not that great.

Looked excellent on a couple of occasions and pretty poor on others. He may have grown into the position and been brilliant but we will never know. Given a season of injuries and the fact we really have to go up, we have to be looking for better and without injury concerns.

'Little we saw' being the issue with him. Certainly a very good player in there if he could stay fit. Made little impact here or at Peterborough, he really needs to play 35+ games somewhere next season at as high a level as possible. I can see him in L1, and if I opened TWTD and saw we had signed him I certainly wouldn't be disappointed.

He impressed until he got injured.

Could tackle, pass and get forward, an ideal LWB. Not many players in that position can do all three, they can usually do two at most.

As you say he certainly looked like he enjoyed getting forward, but looked solid at the back too. I liked the look of him and thought we were on to something, but alas injuries prevailed.

A highlight of his has to be that ball he whipped in for Bonne to nod home, at Lincoln possibly.

If he looked solid at the back, his team-mates must have had a collective nightmare, as we conceded a goal every 37 minutes when he was on the pitch.

He was part of a side that looked lost tactically, with no real spine in the middle and a keeper who couldn't catch a bus.

If you look at how many goals we've ever conceded with Kenlock on the pitch you might conclude he's peak Ashley Cole.

When players get injured after a handful of games the memory plays tricks, I think? Coulson's offensive numbers were nothing special, even relative to the amount of time he spent on the pitch and he struggled defensively at times. That scorching cross to Bonne was the exception rather than the rule.

Same. Although I wonder if we will stick with 3 at the back or not. Seems to be read as gospel but it's possible McKenna might also want a 4 at times and have Donacien at RB and someone equally solid at LB so that he can get more from the wingers in some games.

I think he is a really good wing back and would have him back like a shot but as others have said we would have to keep our fingers crossed on his fitness issues .

Bit harsh on Walton, that.

Yeah, fair. Hladky had been binned at that point I think when Penney was binned for Coulson.

Rest still applies, take that Bolton game, absolute car crash of a performance but wouldn't say it particularly reflected on Coulson. It was KVY on the other side that was absolutely rinsed.

Equally, both Lincoln and Wycombe targeted Coulson as a defensive weakness and we looked far more solid when he went off in those games.

No, not with his injury record.

I think he showed he's a good player, but we need to be looking at a first choice LWB, and you can't choose somebody with a blotted injury record.

Was going to ask how did he get on at Posh, just had a look and he managed 5 appearances, not sure if that was down to injuries or form.

We have to do better than this. I would prefer to have either Pieters or Bardsley both released from Burnley. Short term maybe but more solid.

I think it would be such a risk after this season, he just wasn't durable at all - obviously luck plays a big part in that but he didn't do anything at Posh either

Not for me OK going forward but not so good positional sense defending also non stop injured

He was crocked after about 15 minutes at Wycombe and came off. Lincoln I thought he played well first half, I thought after we scored especially we dominated and it was the first time I thought OK maybe we're starting to go somewhere. He was bombing forward but clearly knackered. Then he came off and it was backs to the wall really, which is when Woolfenden came on at left back.

This was the issue with Coulson, he was literally never fit. In fact I would say he probably was never fit in any of his appearances for us. Someone will take a punt and it will go 1 of 2 ways, if they can keep him fit I think they've got a good player. Boro have had high hopes for him but he needs to stay fit. He needs a season where he's nailed on and starts 30+ games at least.

Even before his injury at Wycombe they were dropping long diagonals aerials on his head. Lincoln also had a (probably onside) goal chalked off where Coulson lost his man.
