But sadly some of that mud stuck, only yesterday had a colleague saying they are all the same, Starmer was drinking beer too… Frustrating, but when most of the popular press is in your back pocket you always have this option.

Most of it came from embittered Corbynites actually. They are now having a meltdown on twitter after saying all week that he had been fined but taken out a super injunction.

It is utterly bizarre how much they don’t want a Labour Govt and would rather the Tories stayed in via their hijacking of Starmer at every opportunity

Most? Come off it. It's a few nutters. This was mostly another right wing/Tory smear, and a pathetically hypocritical one at that.

A friend of mine is in that camp. He can't differentiate between Starmer's Labour and the Conservative Party, which to me seems disingenuous at best. It is my view that a primary failure of many Socialists the world over is the inability to, if not quite embrace pragmatism or expediency, at least consider that there is a spectrum upon which political movements lie, and that some scenarios are worse than others. Of course that requires nuance and a willingness to accept that you might be fecked.

No fines for Starmer on 13:20 - Jul 8 with 1511 views | wkj | There was chit chat on the Express comment sections about how Starmer and Rayner were cautioned, but not fined and starmer had used his contacts to supress the verdict with Durham council. Sadly, this will be the truth for some as we continue down the road of armchair back benching.

Utter nonsense. That Skwawkbox tweet is doing more heavy lifting for you than a forklift. Anyone remotely serious on the left called it out as a desperate smeary attempt to deflect from Johnson. Yes, there are people on the left who wanted Starmer to be tripped up here. I’d have had a wry smile because even though I’d much rather Starmer was tripped up for his lying, empty and pretty hopeless vision, there would have been some poetic justice re: going down over a smear campaign. But the substance of the allegation prompting the investigation was weak right from the start. Savilesque in fact. And nothing even close to the Tory abuse of Covid restrictions.

I can’t speak for your friend but I don’t differentiate from Starmer’s Labour and the Conservative Party in any serious way. They are two centre-right, neoliberal, self-interested and relatively authoritarian offerings, and neither seem to be addressing the underlying issues or future challenges in our society and economy. Bring the actual nuance of what policies would help the people of the UK – now and in the future – and then I think we’d see a different debate and the major parties having to respond rather than say they’re the only game in town so suck it! Moving from sh1t government to sh1t government doesn’t sound like much of a plan. And just cements the difficulties the UK is facing.

That is true, yes. Infighting isn't a pragmatic way forward, although I do understand why it happens. But those spending more time wilfully destroying those adjacent to their politics rather than broadly uniting against a common 'enemy'? Pretty damn frustrating.

That is the problems with 'Trots' - most on the left agree with the analysis of what is wrong, what is the cause etc - but disagree what is to be done. Where I disagree with those of Momentum, SWP, IS Or what ever they call themselves is that their's is a very dishonest position - as it comes from the view that the working class cannot achieve mass class consciousness and so need to be lead That is done by those in momentum getting behind every struggle so as to demonstrate that reform is always doomed to eventual failure - which will then lead ..........to, err .... revolution Not only is this flawed as history has shown, but inevitably leads to newbies becoming disenchanted, and moving away from politics. Their entryist tactic is now been aped by the ERG (and fellow travellers), and highlights one of the blindingly obvious flaws in the guff that is PR. Factions will inevitably seek to gain control of a larger party rather than promote their minority view. I have lost count of the number of times I have been told that it is 'tactics, comrade' when challenging these liars. It is now much the same in the right where the defence of far right views are defended by the claims of getting back to 'core Tory values'. 'twas ever thus, I'm afraid

What is the practical way forward in your situation? Reject our mainstream political system entirely because there's no hope of a truly progressive left-wing government? Seems fair on the face of it, but also somewhat of an admission of having given up.
