They can’t get enough of hysteria. I was in the UK for 6 weeks last summer and literally didn’t see the Sun. August was god awful. This is going to last 48 hours!
Of course climate change needs to be addressed globally but the absolute melt down (exude the pun) is a bit ridiculous. Look out for the people that need it and make sure they are ok in advance goes without saying. Many places deal with this week in week our every summer. It was 41 here for for 4 days in a row in June.

They love a bit if hysteria. Some years back my dad and I had been to the game and were coming back to Kent, as my parents and sister were staying with us. Coming over the Dartford Bridge, the temperature showed 40 degrees. Ok so we had dinner in our little garden and boy was it hot, but I don’t remember anything bursting into flames. Just the desire for a few cold ones.

Its not just about the temperature this week either is it?
Our winters in the UK get milder and shorter every year (with occasional cold snaps), and (in Suffolk anyway) we seem to get longer and longer dry periods over the Spring and Summer - currently my lawn is so dry even the weeds are dying. These are clearly noticeable trends.
Plus, you know, the vast majority of the scientific community telling us that this is happening.
I appreciate that JJJJJJJJ's post was less about denial of climate change and more about hysterical reporting, but the problem is that those that do want to deny always pick up on the wrong reporting and base their case on it. | |

The global fight for action on climate change is on a knife edge right now, we seemed to be making progress but now I’m very fearful those with vested interests in halting these measures are gaining ground and more influence with our politicians.

It was always going to be a tough ask to avoid the overall tipping point into runaway climate change and societal and environmental collapses, given inherent human short term self-interest seems to trump even the future well-being of our own children.

The actually quite large scale of the increments and the frequency at which they are coming mean that when you look at the thing over a more meaningful timescale, say a decade rather than year by year, you certainly could classify the additive result as a sudden leap against a 'normal' context.
The sort of sudden leaps Canada for example has seen in the last year are terrifying and it would be very strange if what we are seeing here is not part of the same world pattern.
I realise you're views are probably not contradictory to most of that, but I think we probably should be seeing this as a sudden leap (in the context of not just one year) because of the ramifications that has for a number of positive feedback cycles and resultant tipping points. | |

Places that are normally hot deal with heat by having aircon or designing houses and other structures that way.
Places that for hundreds of years haven't dealt with these temperatures are probably not best suited to deal with this heat.
Potentially getting 41c in London. That's insane temperatures.
