I got proper owned by a Brexiteer today 17:00 - Sep 4 with 5316 views | bluelagos | Was having a good rant, pointing out the damage the Brexit voters had delivered to our businesses, economy, rights to live in the EU etc. Also laughed at his suggestion that Boris was anything other than a self serving tosser and that his party had tolerated his lies when they thought they could still win with him in charge. To counter, he pointed out to me how most people start on the left of politics and over their life time drift to the right, something I know to be true for many. He said it was a matter of time but I'd get their eventually. I said not all drift to the right, I was clinging to my principles and remain a lefty, to which he countered I am "just a late developer" Ouch...Did make me laugh though. I got proper owned by a Brexiteer today on 05:16 - Sep 5 by Ryorry | "If we’re being picky, a government that takes climate change seriously and is prepared to invest in renewable energy" That shouldn't come towards the end of your list & be deemed "picky" - it should be at the very top & regarded as the first & foremost major requirement. If it's not treated like that, L v R politics will uncomfortably soon become a complete irrelevance while we literally struggle to survive with our heads above water & enough food to eat. Pakistan right now, not to mention the ever-increasing out-of-control wildfires everywhere, are warnings a horrible number of "leading" (I wish they were, properly) politicians worldwide are ignoring. |
You're one of the good Boomers, R!

I agree largely, but good luck telling Mick Lynch he is right wing. My own personal theorem about Brexit is that Europeans generally love it because it saves them from invading one another or voting in dictators, but we have never had that problem.

Thanks! But have to say (referring also to your previous post) that imho generalisations about generation-based thinking don't stack up or give anything like a picture of reality. "Boomers" do indeed include many ageing hippies (as someone referenced) like myself who've not forgetten or changed any of our fundamental beliefs. We grew up with Rachel Carson's 'Silent Spring', Prince Charles' frequent & prescient public comments & actions, CND, Greenham Common, concern over acid rain (as you mentioned). Not just in my small friendship group (4 of us in 70s) but scanning my brain for other friends, acquaintances, colleagues going back since the 1970s, I can only think of two couples + an old school friend who I'm still in touch with, who turned Tory, & the latter's nevertheless very much still an environmentalist. On the other hand, I know quite a few in their 40s & 50s ("Thatcher's children" I guess) who vote Tory.

Generalizations are always harsh on someone, but this graph is pretty clear on who votes Tory / who doesn't

I'm surrounded by right wing boomers who retired to Gower after their job in the city. All dressed up like extras in Howards Way. What a time to be alive. Pale beige chinos, check Blazer with gold buttons, check Golf club or yacht club tie, check Speaking boorishly and loudly enough for everyone in the pub to hear, check

Just seen that was a YouGov survey, and therefore I genuinely question its validity. I was a YouGov survey participant for several years, but about 2 months ago stopped participating because so many of them were quite seriously flawed in their questioning. It'd need someone like Cotty to look closer, but I frequently balked at questions like "what is your current occupation" when there was no option for "retired", eg, & you couldn't move on to complete the survey unless you ticked some box or other that was actually completely incorrect.

I got proper owned by a Brexiteer today on 15:19 - Sep 5 with 582 views | dirtyboy | I started off Conservative, but only because parents did it and I blindly followed. Then, like Skynet, I inexplicably became self-aware and voted Liberal Democrats (oh how wonderful those years of niaivety were lol!) I then flirted with Labour and saw the centrist Blair years, before having to go blue due to Corbyn absolutely terrifying me. I would probably vote the Raving Loony Party next, but not actually sure which one that is currently! I see issues with both main parties all the time, but to continue with this lot in charge seems mental, we've backed ourselves into a very small corner and we're becoming less and less significant as a country but appear to be more and more bullish in terms of how our leaders see us as the Dunning-Kruger virus...sorry, effect sweeps through Westminster at an alarming rate. We're all doomed!

That graph is a snapshot in time, I suspect in 25 years time that red-blue shift will become far less pronounced than how it is today. What is very interesting though is the proportion voting LD remains fairly constant, what would cause that? (Not a pointed question, just generally intrigued!)

“What is very interesting though is the proportion voting LD remains fairly constant, what would cause that?
